Rutgers deserves better

Sold out, blacked out crowd for an NIT qualifier that roars to its feet when a flukey and-1 bounces in to cut the deficit to 18. Our best, highest-earning players can't see the floor down 20 because they don't care enough, I guess.

Third straight game with the gritty, scrappy Rutgers falling down by at least 17. Pike obviously gets a pass for at least next year with the recruiting he's done, but this mercurial, fragile team is sadly characteristic of the last three seasons imo.

The roster is way worse in this particular season

Hobbs turned away Hurley and the fanbase was happy about it

Although the team talent is not good it is not commensurate with the dysfunction on the court. The players deserve better coaching. The fans deserve better play and coaching.

Agreed, but it's not just this year. How did the '21-'22 team manage to start out in the 200's in the NET and make the tourney? How did our tournament-caliber squad go beat Purdue and NW on the road and lose 4 Q3 games? How is this year's team capable of that 4-0 stretch only to offer up performances like tonight and Penn State?

Other teams aren't this wildly temperamental and it goes beyond talent.

I have no qualms about hiring Pike. He's done amazing, unprecedented things here, he's been a top class ambassador and will surely leave the program better than he found it. But Rutgers has been a bottom three Big Ten team the past 13 months, and the RAC today showed that shouldn't be acceptable imo.

Those two decisions (Hurley, pike) were not mutually exclusive at the time the first one was made.

Does the fan base deserve better? Turned off by NIL, doesn’t want upgrade stadium and additional revenue in the program, doesn’t want to replace average players.

Team and fanbase might be a good match.

No one wants to rip Pike. only a bunch of 18-22 year olds. This is mostly on him. The last two games we look like we don't even have a coach. We're just totally disorganized. No one improves their offensive game with this staff. Pike brought excitement back to Rutgers basketball and I'm glad for that. Not many wanted the job when he took it, but that is no longer the case. We can now do a lot better. Stop ripping into Simpson, Hyatt, Mag and company. They were either not good enough to begin with or we've been unable to make them better. Either way, the fault lies with the staff.

This has been a bad team all year and we had a nice 2 week run to give some hope. All year I have expected to lose games by 20 (because that's what we have been doing mostly). .500 this year would be very impressive. Worst year In 8 years I can accept.

Yea I have no issues with a down year, it's just aggravating that in the last three years each team seems plagued by absurd inconsistency. Hopefully its a talent issue, but idk

Better than the guy who they hired after him. Aside from saying Noah is above his level and kid's don't improve with this staff, I don't often rip into kids like many others here because regardless of whether they're getting money or not, they're still kids. The kids should be off limits, but not Pike. He's really doing a crappy job now.

At this point, we are pretty much done for post season play. I think the coaching staff has to be more focused on what players will be key with the incoming class. Can Gavins be the guy with the 3's? Who will still be here?
Harper and Ace can't do it alone and that is assuming they can play in the BiG like they play in HS.
The "one and done" opportunity does not happen at Rutgers. If it ends up badly, FLUSH 🚽

Hurley bet on himself. He asked for the sky and Rutgers wouldn't bite. It worked out for him.

That said, there's no way he would have stayed here in the long haul. It would have been fool's gold because he would have given us some quick success but we would always be worrying about the big schools poaching him.

Pike will screw up the team next year. His gameplan is awful, substitutions are terrible and his timeouts are poorly timed. I have serious doubts on his ability to take us to the next level
Let’s pin this one and revisit of course we would need to know what is your definition of next level

Have you seen Indiana, Michigan and Ohio State that have better talent and struggle just as bad.

I can't believe how bad those three are.
I mean...how hard is it to recruit for Indiana, Michigan, or Ohio State ?

Hurley would have picked up and left by the time 1/8th of his contract was over at Rutgers (that’s if he ever let himself to accept the job in the first place).
