Rogers falling on contact - him or Leach?

To be clear, this is not a criticism of Will Rogers. It's a legitimate question.

I think the Mullen (and to a lesser extent Moorhead) era made us accustomed to Relf/Dak/Fitz/Shrader powering through contact, so sometimes it's a little frustrating watching the QB go down as soon as he's touched.


Is that coached into him or is that a decision by Rogers?

I assume that's coached to protect the ball and/or the quarterback since both quarterbacks we've started under Leach do it, but I wanted to get the group's thoughts.

Probably Leach trying to avoid turnovers and mostly having to use his second string QB which basically I'm not sure exist in all actuality. I could be wrong, but Will is certainly no GS/Fitz type QB. As in more fragile. Mullen always had some tough *** QBs

If you're not strong enough to drag defenders, it's stupid to fight to stay upright. All that does is give more chances for you to get stripped or hurt. Will's not moving any SEC defender or breaking even arm tackles. He needs to go down as soon as somebody has a hold of him unless it's somebody just barely hanging on.

It's coached by Leach and the vast majority of college and NFL coaches everywhere, unless your QB is a dual threat. Even then, a couple extra yards in the middle of the game (not for a first down or touchdown) are not worth the contact and potential injury to the most important player on the team.

I don't have a problem with him avoiding contact unless he is going for a 1st down or a touchdown then he better not slide.

If you happened to watch the Sunday Night game last night Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes both slide or go down immediately when they feel like they’re about to be hit. It’s all in protecting yourself.

And he would be wrong. The QB value is way different than the days he played. The days are not gone of a power running QB in college (see Mullen) but Will Rogers is no power running QB. Switching QB's midseason could potentially cost us 2 or 3 more losses this year. No way we need Rogers taking hits.

Well I understand why Jim Brown wouldn’t like it, but I also wouldn’t want him coaching my team, because that’s idiotic. The benefit of Corral or Rogers getting a first in a game (in most situations) doesn’t outweigh the detriment of having to play without them. I think Ole Miss is an 8-4 or 9-3 team with Corral. Meaning I think we will go 4-3 or 5-2 in last 7 games. Without him… whew doggy. Not good. I’d imagine y’all are in a similar situation.

Your QB not taking unnecessary hits is paramount. Emphasis on unnecessary.
