I thought you meant this guy
Gone too soon. He made an absolutely legendary play against Oklahoma with the National Championship on the line. These showdowns were of an entirely different level than any younger Husker fans can even fathom.
Sad to hear of Neil’s passing. Witnessed that play in person. OU fans were livid that PI wasn’t called. Cold and wet that day in Norman, the PA announcer provided the weather forecast for Nebraska I believe from west to east with blizzard and heavy snowfall warnings for SE Nebraska. We arrived in Lincoln the next day soon after about 10 inches of snow had fallen. Downtown was deserted and I think we had PO Pears all to ourselves for Burger Madness. When I saw this I immediately thought of the pass break up on 4th down in that Oklahoma game. I cut the Sports Illustrated photo of it out and had it on my wall as a kid.
Gone too soon. Rest in Peace.

Those WERE the days. We were a top program and each year usually came down to NU and Oklahoma. I only attended two Nebraska-OU games. Eff Oklahoma and their cheatin' cowardly ways!Hate to sound like an old nostalgic fart living in the past, but damn those were the days. Those OU games were epic. You wondered and worried all season, “we are good, but can we beat OU?”
Sucks how sucky we are now.
Yeah, I have to chuckle when I read comments about all time great players and games, etc. and stuff from the last 15-20 years is brought up.God, those were the days. Younger fans have no idea the magnitude of the games we played in back then. Some poster thought we were still relevant on the national stage. Poster must be 10 years old,
Some of us weren’t kids back thenDamn. You realize how old you are when guys you watched as kids are now passing. Neil had the longest arm span. Dude was a force.
I remember switzers interview after the game like it was yesterday, if I remember correctly he said something like the splat him in the dam mouth no call
Yep, I loved it that Barry S. was so dang mad! When crap didn't go his way, such a whining baby! Oh, I like Barry, but there was players getting many benefits for going to OU that wasn't regular!Yep. He said something like "he hit Shepherd in the damn face" during his postgame interview. I was in that end zone about 20 rows up. The rain game.
Those games were amazing, even though we lost several of them to the hated, cheating Sooners. It was like two hammers ramming into each other for four quarters, with fast All-American backs running 'round the corners. It was glorious.
