Excellent NBA player & coach. Only NBA player to average 7 rebounds & 2 steals a game.

Dirty as hell and he’d rip your heart out. Very limited skills for an NBA player who was all heart and hustle. Together with Van Lier, they were nasty. Great coach.

Jerry Sloan was a wonderful coach and an outstanding player in college and the NBA. In 1965 my college, Bellarmine College hosted Evansville in the NCAA Division II tournament in the regional on our campus in Louisville. The Evansville Purple Eagles won in a very close game and went on to win the NCAA D-2 Championship and finished the season undefeated. The Evansville team used our Cross Country locker room and my twin brother and I ran 4 years and were co captains for 2 years. Our coach who was also our assistant basketball coach to Alex Groza allowed my twin brother and me to meet the Evansville team in their locker room after the game. I got to shake hands with most of the players but Jerry was so nice to my brother and me. He had such a firm grip of a hand shake that was one of the two strongest I have ever shook hands with. I will remember how strong that was forever. I always rooted for him as a player and a coach. He was the 4th pick in the NBA draft just 3 months later after that game.

Believe he averaged 14pts per game in the NBA.

Great coach who I believe was over .500 every year except 1 year. If it wasn’t for Jordan, Jazz probably win at least 1 title.

Remember him as a player on those Bulls teams in early mid 70s with Bob Love, Chet Walker, Norm Van Lier and Bob Weiss. Think Dick Motta was the HC.

Jerry Sloan and Gus Johnson from the Bullets were the two toughest players I've ever seen in the NBA.
One of my favorite SI covers.

RIP above to another great Knick of the Golden Days - Dave Debusschere.

He was damn tough and tenacious in his own right

Everyone talks about Knicks/Celtics, but those Bullet/Knicks games were absolute wars.

Johnson/ Debusschere... Unseld/Reed....Frazier/Monroe.....Bradley/Jack Marin

Marin ended up being traded to the Rockets for Elvin Hayes.

Yes they were. Remember them quite well. I remember a fight between Marin and Bradley if I recall back in the days. Those Bullets - Knicks games were wars

Jack Marin was a very, very good player. If you look at the stats they're comparable or even better then Bradley's.

Was living in Chicago during the Sloan , Van Lier era and saw them numerous times.

They were a handful.

They were really wars. Two great clubs. And yes re: Gus Johnson. What a tough, great player. Loved him.
