One of many funny Bowden quotes

"If short hair and good manners won football games, Army and Navy would play for the national championship every year,"

They don't make coaches like Bowden anymore.

In college, Randy Moss began his career at Florida State. After watching him at practice, Coach Bowden commented about Moss, "He can run like a scalded dog."

I got to go to one of the Bowden quarterback/receiver camps in 2001 at Troy. All of his sons were there. Terry Bowden was my coach.

Bobby Bowden was a great guy and very personable. I guess if you make it to 91 you’ve done pretty well.

I was watching an FSU game with a friend of mine that never misses a thing during a game. He started laughing saying “Here comes a bootleg!” Sure enough, next play, FSU runs a naked bootleg for conversion on third and long. My friend rewound the DVR and Bowden had snatched a headset off an assistant and started yelling in the mic while doing a frantic stirring motion with his other hand. It would have been great television if the announcers had noticed it.

My sister in law worked in the FSU athletic dept one year. Said he was giving a speech one time at a dinner. Was talking about their fullback at the time. Said “I like him because he’s so consistent and reliable. If u need two yards, he’ll get u two yards. If u need four yards, he’ll get u two yards.”

I remember FSU playing at Scott Field back in the 70’s. Bowden had just taken over at FSU and he had two QB’s that played. I think we won that game.

I watched him coach only one game in person. They were playing Southern Miss at the Gator Bowl stadium. Hotter than the 7 hells, and THE most hostile crowd I have ever seen. I was just a kid. Southern Miss won at the last second, and I fell in love with the game that day.

OK older guys....didn't Bowden apply for the MSU job when we hired Tyler or maybe it was Bellard?

It was Bowden's 3rd year at FSU. FSU went 8-3 but didn't make a bowl game after beating Texas Tech in the Tangerine Bowl the year before. Tyler's boys ripped them a new one 55-27. The next year, their Orange Bowl team won 17-6.

I was there too, about 17 yrs old and first game I ever drove to, just me and a friend. We sat on West side just North of the old press box on the top row, remember it like it was yesterday but I can't remember what I had for breakfast earlier today

I've never heard that rumor. Kind of doubt it. West Virginia wasn't all that much back in the early 70s, but MSU was beyond dismal back then. And by the time Tyler left, he was on the verge of really hitting it big at FSU and we were coming off probation.

I’m a younger guy but I remember a Bowden being mentioned for the job during a broadcast but I was thinking it was one of his sons either when JWS was hired or fired. And if it was when JWS was fired then Lonnie Tinkle would have been better off hiring Bobby Bowden’s mother than Croom

Terry Bowden was definitely mentioned as a possible candidate for our job when Jackie was fired. Don't know that he was ever a real candidate, but several of the talking heads mentioned him.

Possible when we hired Tyler in 73, which would have been after his 3rd year at WVU. FSU was dismal when he left WVU but he was dead set to get back south and close to Birmingham where his mother and mother in law were living. He looked at FSU as a ticket to get back south and he would leave for bigger program as soon as he could. He just made his own big program.

I never heard it but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I believe Bellard was already HC at aTm at the time.

I guess he's like Bum Phillips after he got fired by the Saints. A reporter asked him what he was doing these days. His answer, "Not a damn thing. And I don't start till noon."
