One day I pretty sure he is going to Penn State. The next day I’m pretty sure he’s staying at Nebraska.

Money matters. He voiced his opinion that he doesn’t have enough at Nebraska. He spoke about the ingrained belief that “It’s not the Nebraska way”. But he wants it to be.

Those items says he doesn’t feel he’s getting what he Wants and Needs in Lincoln. In his opinion. And Penn State would provide those funds. Major Factor!

He can compete for a Big Ten title easier at Penn State than he can at Nebraska. He can compete there right now. He’d have the money and would have a much larger pool of recruits close by.

He’s very close friends with the Penn State AD. They even co-own a lake house together. (Per Jim Rice).

And it’s home for him.

Penn State offers a handful of significant opportunities that he’s not gonna get in Lincoln.

We’re going to find out just how much he Loves Nebraska, a destination position per his words.

I have no inside knowledge, JMO today, he’s headed to Pennsylvania.

He could also lose out and if that happens PSU fans will go scorched earth if that happens: oh well they deserve it

Not sure it would be a bad thing for Nebraska long term. If Matt does indeed leave for PSU one thing I don't want to hear him say but I can almost guarantee he will, is that he leaves Nebraska in a better palace than he found it, he will leave it in turmoil.

I like what Rhule's doing here at NU. It's a slow build, but at least it's a build. But I ain't losing sleep about anything related to this football program anymore. If he leaves, we'll hire someone else. But will Penn State fan be excited about getting Rhule? Nope. Unless Rhule goes on a run. Needs to beat USC and then go to Unhappy Valley and curb stomp the Penn State. Then he'll have more appeal I guess. Recency bias.

Who cares! At least we’ll get a new O-line coach too….Seriously, with all the struggles we’ve been having, why haven’t we seen some of the underclass men coming in at tackle? They can rotate them on the D-line but not the O-line?? Why?
Is it harder to get the plays/calls right? Is it important to have an in sync line???
That’s on Coaching then!!!

He would have to get an offer from PSU first.

It makes less than zero sense for PSU to trade Franklin plus 50 million for Rhule.

What was the major issue with Franklin? Didn't win big games. How does Rhule improve that situation?

Really don't care if Rhule stays or goes. Not anxious to start over with someone else, but absolutely don't want to see NU get taken for a ride with another contract extension that hasn't been earned.

If I was Dannen, I would tell Rhule's agent that I would like him to stay but if he has a better offer, so be it. No need to negotiate in the press or get into a pissing match. Just make your position clear and stick to it.

Maybe nobody knows the real issue except those close to the situation. It's possible (or probable) there's more to it than has been made public. I don't have any inside info or anything. Just that there's usually more to these things than is made public.

I've gone through all the emotions on this whole thing since Franklin got fired and the media threw Rhules name out there as the next Penn State HC. At first I thought to my self please say it ain't so Matt and went into denial, then when Matt didn't deny any rumors I got angry, now I've accepted what ever will happen and look for a positive result.

We Nebraska fan's have been through the meat grinder of emotions these past 25 years and we've been the brunt of many jokes of media and other fan bases and to a certain extent we've deserved some of it for our arrogance at times in the past. I'm done worry about what Matt Rhule will do after the next three or four games because I have a feeling what's going to happen has already been done one way or another. jmo

Penn State didn’t fire Franklin just to hire Rhule.

People keep saying this. I'm pretty cool on Rhule right now, but who's a sure thing better hire that's realistically available? Especially with other better jobs open and possibly opening? They're already competing with LSU and Florida. Might be adding OU and FSU to that list. Throw Rhule's relationship with the AD and the fact that he's an alumn on the pile and it makes a lot more sense than you would think on the surface.

PSU might be finding themselves in a similar situation that Pedie put us in where they get down to “who can we get” and not “who do we want”. I think they F’d up bigly. Kirby has it rolling at Georgia to some degree but I don’t see many teams being able to sustain the relative success Franklin had at PSU. What Day has done at OSU is pretty impressive, but I can’t ever see PSU attaining that level.

"You can't go home again," and just maybe we're going to find out if Thomas Wolfe was correct if Matt is indeed PSU's choice.

I think with all the firings it has become inevitable Rhule will leave the Huskers. Penn State has no chance getting their first or even second choice so they will be forced to call-up Rhule.
I did not really think of it like that but you might be right.

The PSU fans would not love Rhule right now...but they would warm to him when he explains how he loves PSU and JoPa and blah blah blah.

There are 3 Scenarios. Two of them we would voluntarily take. One of them, we would be forced to take.

1. NU goes on a heater in November, finishes 10-2 and makes the playoff. PSU offers him and he accepts. PSU fans would likely be happy with that turn of events. NU fans probably would too (think about how attractive the NU job would be to prospective coaches in this scenario).
2. NU misses the playoff but still finishes strong. Strong in this case means 8-4 or 9-3. I'm not sure PSU fans would be thrilled with a Rhule hire in this case, especially because there will be candidates that actually DID take their team to the playoff that will be interested in PSU. For Nebraska, I think we'd be happy to see Rhule return with this kind of progress.
3. NU stumbles once again in November and finishes 7-5 or 6-6. No way does PSU offer Rhule then and he stays at NU. NU fans are left wondering if we really are making progress.

I don't buy any of it. Pat Kraft reportedly makes $2.26M a year - about a 1/4 of what the next PSU coach is going to get. Why would he risk his job to hire someone whose resume is the same or worse than Franklin's? Because they're good friends? Bullcrap. It's not happening. I absolutely think Rhule would leave in an instant, but he's not getting the PSU job. Kraft has more self-preservation instinct than that.

I never felt angry about him failing to deny interest in PSU more strongly. Of course he should be interested. IF they offer him the job it will be for similar money and probably 3 more years than what he has left on his NU contract. That’s roughly an extra 36 MILLION MORE DOLLARS. He may be dumb but he ain’t ignorant.

can we just ban the next person that starts a thread like this?

My goodness.....

he's NOT going to PSU, they would lynch the AD
How do I know this? I've talked to quite a few alumni from PSU

Mmmm how big are the checks they write?

And who do they think they'll get that's guaranteed to be better? Someone said it upthread, but who they want and who they can realistically get might are likely two very different things.

A few low dollar alums aren’t going to sway the process any more than the NU alums who wanted Pelini promoted when Frank was canned. I don’t know who they think they can get. Kiffin sure as hell wouldn’t take that job. Maybe they’re delusional enough to think Urban would take it. Belichick will be available😉. Freeman maybe. Can’t see that though. Kelly might be the best available who might take the job. Braun is IMO the guy they could probably get and should pursue. I think he’s one of the best young coaches out there.

The longer their search goes the more likely I think it circles back to Rhule if he gets to 9 wins.
