Rhule NEEDS a Splash Hire at DC

In the last head coach search, I thought Rhule was a great hire. I loved his track record of fixing troubled programs. Since being hired, he said all the right things and recruited very well.

However, after a year in which we had middle school-level special teams, an offense that disappeared for most of the season, and game management that lost us 2-3 games, my confidence in the guy has plummeted.

Holgorsen’s mind for offense is well known; I love the hire. Unfortunately, losing Tony White as DC sucks. I would love the backstory someday on why our best assistant felt the need to take a ****** lateral move.

The Rhule era is rowing in circles. I don’t want a mediocre buddy experiment at DC. Open the damn checkbook and go get a wow hire at DC. This program needs something to jolt it back to life.

Exhibit A of your argument: DH turned a bad offense into a decent one in less than a month. Coaching matters.

Bob Diaco would be a TSUNAMI of a hire.

You mean the OC that’s averaging less than 20 points a game the past month passes the sniff test? Winning one game.

I don't care about splash hires.

I care about good coaches who are obsessed with producing on-field results.

Really - DH averaged 27.3 pts in the 3 B1G games he coached in. Previous 6 we averaged 17.2 and a high of 28. I think he passed the sniff test given he was here for 4 weeks.

In his defense, Iowa fans don't know anything about Offense or Math.

Anyone on this board would be a splash hire. Everyone here seems to know everything about coaching. I'm sure Rhule would be highly impressed with that flag football resume.

EXACTLY! Not real sure why everyone is so gung-ho over DH. He has done some good things in the past but so has Rhule. He produced 10 points against Iowa with "0" coming in the 2nd half. An improvement over Satterfield undoubtedly but hardly awe-inspiring.

I think most fans are eternal optimists with new coach but if you look at the teams Rhule took over for, they were good relatively recently before he took over. Temple was routinely winning 8 games a year before he took over, and he took them to 10 after some horrible seasons. Baylor was full of talent and won a ton of games before Rhule got there, he took over for a team after sanctions but they obviously had talent from before he got there and some recruiting connections from Bryles. He never really stayed long enough at either school to see a full recruiting cycle and after a terrible NFL tenure he has come back to a completely different sport. If he ever was a great coach, it was because of development, staff cohesiveness, and consistency over years. That college football world is long gone. Trev hired a guy fit for 2018, gave him an immortal contract, and then jumped ship when it clicked that Rhule is going to coach like it is 2018. Rhule may be a really great defensive coach, have a great reputation in defensive circles and make a great hire, but Tony White leaving for a 2 win team, literally the most embarrassing team in college football, to be with a coach who should be fired right now, without even entertaining or negotiating for the biggest DC contract in the sport is a real warning sign.

Just hire a current or past DC with a roven record of success.

At Nebraska under Rhule, this would be considered a "splash hire," as so many of the previous ones were not.
For clarity, the one I want is Jim Leonhard. I hope he feels slighted enough by Wisconsin passing on him that he would come somewhere he is appreciated.

Awesome coach who gets the Big 10 and has an axe to grind.

Prior to last year, my resume in college D1 football was equivalent to McGuire.

And I'm gonna be 71 next month.

No reason to neg Holgerson. As a head coach, he won quite a few more than he lost. His coordinator skills are not in doubt. He created his own version of the Air Raid and had 1000 yd rushers at WVU. He is in the process of adding Rhules playbook to his own and then he can essentially make a playbook that works in the Big Ten from those plays.

For the record: Holgorsen W/L record in 13 years as HC is 92-69 for .571;

At West Virginia 61-41 for ..598 and 2 seasons of 10 wins;

At Houston 31-28 for .525 with one season of 12 wins;

Overall 9 winning and 4 losing seasons, which includes the 3-5 Covid season.

I think Holgorsen overachieved for such a short time using someone else’s playbook.

Furthermore, his background as an offensive mind is not in doubt.
DH was a slam dunk hire, best hiring move Rule has made in his career IMO. Just look at the QBs and especially WR's he has coached that play, played on Sundays.
