Hello and welcome back! Normally I saved this post for the beginning of Championship competition but a new site, a new username (had to replace the completely useless old one while acknowledging it had a brand, I'm happy with the moment of brain activity that generated it), and new posting mechanisms meant I decided I'd toss my yearly document out with the creation of my account.

While we are here, I do think this tends to be a good "catch-all" thread for the Olympic sports. I'd like to voice a small preference for each sport to have threads divided by year, I feel when the threads get large info tends to get lost and I've enjoyed going back to previous year threads to remember certain details. Much easier to do that in a 7 page men's soccer thread for the 2023 season than a 35 page thread that covers 4 years of play. But, if people have a strong preference to have all the info for a sport contained in one place, I will follow the consensus.

Either way, welcome back, and I have just checked the option to "Watch this thread" ;).

Glad to see this thread, as I always enjoy the work you do to track the sports programs. I also changed my user name, as I have been Matchone on the 247 site for more than 22 years.

Wrestling will likely stay yellow this year, as we lost our 3X AA and 2 other starters. While not many of Coach Scott’s young wrestlers have progressed to the point of scoring significant team points at the ncaat, this will be the first year Coach Koll’s recruits will be competing for starting spots. We will be largely relying on transfers (6) and redshirt freshmen (2-3) to fill the 10 starting spots. Hopefully a few can take a big step forward this year to compensate for the loss of McNeil.

Welcome Throwaway123! I'm glad you are here!

I penned many of the threads without the year listed. Give me a couple of days and I will put a year in each of them, no problem. Original content from IC staff or national staff will likely still be highlighted in their own thread, but everything else is just self-policing. But I totally agree that I like the 1-thread-1-sport format from the old board.

Things start kicking off tonight!

Women's Soccer plays NC State in the regular season finale. We are currently T8 in the ACC. I'm not going to take up the time to figure out how the tiebreakers play out exactly, but a win puts us on 18 points, which is currently T3 with the following teams having relevant games:

Duke (Currently 3rd, 18 points) vs. Clemson (T10, 14) - Duke will finish ahead of us on tiebreakers more than likely, Clemson cannot pass us with a win
UVA (T4, 17) vs. BC (13th, 5) - UVA win passes us, tie is even with us
Louisville (T4, 17) vs. SMU (12th, 8) - SMU win passes us, tie is even with us
Florida State (T4, 17) vs. Wake Forest (T8, 15) - FSU win passes us, tie is even with us. Wake Forest win ties us.
California (7, 16) vs. Stanford (T1, 25) - Cal win passes us.

Tiebreakers are:
1. Head to Head (0 points vs. Duke/FSU, did not play UVA/Louisville/Wake Forest/California)
2. Most wins over common opponents (The teams we did beat...took a lot of losses)
3. Goal Differential in conference games

We need to finish 6th to qualify for the ACC Championships.

Tomorrow:

XC will have the ACC Championships for Men's and Women's XC. Both teams need wins over teams that are likely to qualify for NCAAs, men need them to be more comfortable, women need them to get in a reasonable position to qualify.

Field Hockey has their last regular season match. UNC is 6-1 and T2 right now in the ACC, Wake Forest is 7-0 playing 6-1 Virginia.

Men's Soccer has their last regular season match, UNC is currently 9th but everyone qualifies for the ACCT.

Up to 281 points with results so far.

Tomorrow will be XC, every placed gained up to 17th is worth 1 point overall, every place 9-16th is worth 1.5. I doubt either team will compete higher than those finishes.

I heard the Carolina Insider podcast say that there is some metric where our football team could qualify for a bowl at 5-7, but that requires us to beat state.…

Apparently we do have the #1 APR so we'd be number 1 of 5-7 teams. I do wonder if we'd decline a bid in that scenario. I've removed the 0 for now.

We are always near the top after the fall, it's a good set of sports for us and iffier for the big contenders.

Points are awarded for team results only, so women's tennis is purely decided by NCAA Team Tournament in May (You can pencil us in for top 8 I would think)

25 points up for grabs tonight based on the Volleyball selection show...it sounds like our case is very controversial with an RPI that likely should miss by 5-6 spots but good computer rankings. Volleyball is a required counter for the Director's Cup, so avoiding a counting 0 is important

Fall is now wrapped up, an above average season but a bit down from the last few years. For now I think I'm going to leave Men's Soccer as yellow, though the contract decision really could go either way IMO.

Wrestling Team is about to wrestle a match against state, in a match that has the 2 teams ranked 11 & 9 in the Intermat dual team rankings. This is the closest the teams have been in over a decade of state dominating the series. Carolina is 1 place higher in the coaches poll, at #10, with 2 returning starters missing the entire season after the first week. We start 5 redshirt freshmen starting (coach Koll’s first recruiting class) and a true freshman, along side 4 more experienced wrestlers. The biggest concern is there is no obvious AAs needed to finish top 30 in the ncaa tournament. Posting this late, but tonight’s match should be good if you have access to acc nx.

Big J Journalism...I reached out to the Director's Cup contacts on their website to ask how they're going to handle fencing going to 2 separate championships this year. Based on the email I received...they may have just found out! That may cause some issues with my tracking but we'll do the bet we can.

Lots of finishes getting recorded and points getting scored this week:

1. Women's Swimming felt the loss of Aranza but still scored 50 director's cup points overall
2. The fencing split will mess with the overall winter score but overall good finishes, especially by the men
3. Gymnastics is clinched to avoid the play-in round and finished 5th at ACCs
4. Wrestling was in line with the last 2 years
5. Women's basketball matched last year
6. We all know the men's basketball situation, I've moved the team to red.

It was unfortunate that Caleb Wilson got hurt. The team would have done better in the ACCT as well as the NCAAT. We saw what happened to SMU, Clemson, and Louisville, all three of these teams also lost their best players in they did not get far in the tournament as well for their men's basketball teams.

@TAHeel don’t feel need to answer but what do you think is next potential yellow to green and next potential yellow to red?

My candidates would be WBB for potential green and Football for potential red.

Yellow to Green Candidates:
WBB is the obvious, there are a few others that could get a bump if they have an outperformance in their next tournaments (Men's XC, MGolf, WGolf, Gym, Softball off the top of my head)

Yellow to Red:
Football, MSoccer, MTennis all could announce tomorrow they'd change their coach and I wouldn't be overly surprised.

Men's Swimming points added, the last outstanding team for the winter is Gymnastics. Have also added the relevant notes that there is a change coming for the MBB program.

Funnily enough, I have made a yellow to green switch that wasn't on my list above. Men's Swimming was green last year, but after falling from 4th to 8th at the ACC meet and having some point scorers from last year disappear, I changed the team to yellow. But, now that the NCAA meet has come and gone, the team had its best finish since 2015 while still being only the 7th best team from the ACC! So, the conference has majorly leveled up and the continued upward trend at nationals for the program is worthy of a green IMO.

I'd estimate the winter score is being boosted by ~50 points from the fencing split. So while a 3rd place finish at regionals by Gymnastics would technically be the best winter ever, in actuality it's been very good but behind last year's results.

Finally, we do have to talk about the elephant in the room that is going to be our final score for the year. We are already only 2 spring sports away from beginning to have to drop scores, and our lowest droppable score right now is actually a pretty good 34 points. And while lots of teams are scoring, only Field Hockey has >70. Barring multiple very deep runs in the spring, I'd say we're pretty clearly behind the pace of last year.

With Breschi extended to 2029, outstanding contracts we don't know about, and my guess as to what may be announced in the next few months:

DiBitetto - 2030
Somoano - All signs are he is back for next year, so probably a 2029 deal announced soon? Maybe 2028?
Gangloff - 2031
Paul - Probably out
Koll - 2030
