Replay has made refs lazy

It's gotten progressively worse from year to year. No one with a functioning brain cell would think a fair catch was signaled. Can you even call for a fair catch on a kick that bounces?

Lazy, and even worse than they were before replay. Last night was ridiculous. On one play, they even waited until AFTER an injury time out to even review the play. WTF? Was the replay booth officials injured too? Actually, if they were that might explain a lot.

Yep. It really seems the refs are reluctant to make a call at times. They let plays go and rely on replay to correct the call. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it doesn't.

Maybe this was addressed on the broadcast but I thought if a kickoff was fair caught the ball goes to the 25. So it seems to me that they screwed that one up too.

Agree man, it is so awful. ONLY those refs thought that was a good idea. You really just can't explain the incompetence, it's like you're watching WWF when the ref gets knocked out, then comes back in after the guy gets hit with a chair.

I think things were better before replay, they still get calls wrong all the time, but now you have another set of people looking at the replays and still getting it wrong, all the time. It’s still just as infuriating but it takes 10 times longer and really confirms bias and terrible officiating.

I was flipping to other games during one of our commercial breaks and landed on the Penn State game. OSU threw an incomplete pass that bounced on the ground TWICE and a Penn State guy picks it up and takes it to the other end. The refs throw their hands up for a TD. They go back and review it and rule it an incomplete pass. Incompetent refs aren’t exclusive to the SEC but they do tell other refs to hold their beers.

Im pretty sure they charged us with a penalty and marked off fifteen yards from the 25 to the 10. At least that’s the only way that makes sense to me for what they did. The box score might confirm it. But who knows really, I thought that was the stupidest flag I’ve ever seen. The ball bounced, and Tulu was making a pretty big cut to the ball when his hand seemed to fly up a bit. I thought he was just using it to keep his balance more than anything. I don’t think it was kicked right at him, then hitting the ground he probably had to adjust to get to it. I can come up with many reasons, but none suggest fair catch to me.

They need to reign in what's reviewable to things that have fairly objective and measurable rulings. Catches, fumbles, spotting the ball. Using replay to determine whether a player called fair catch or to determine whether forward progress has been stopped (Kansas/OU game) is either laziness or unwillingness to make a tough call or be held solely responsible for it

Only plays that should ever be reviewed are coaches' challenges. You get unlimited challenges, but you lose a time out of you're wrong. If you're out of time outs, it's a delay of game penalty. They spend WAY too much time reviewing calls that are obviously right or that have no impact on the game at all. Put it in the coaches hands, and they'll sort out pretty quickly which calls need to be reviewed and which ones don't.
