Recruiting is Fluid- Coach Talk

Once again, I'm no where near the level UK.

But I want to talk a little about leaked information and recruiting being fluid.

First off, no one can be 100% right about a kid at anytime. I had a kid do everything but show up on campus. He signed the paperwork, we got his housing settled, picked his classes. BOOM, kid went to a Junior College instead without telling us.

Another kid didn't even visit us and called me up one day and said he wanted to come. Everything is fluid. I personally don't feel great about a kid getting on campus until he's enrolled for a few weeks.

Now consider how much larger scale things are at the D-1 level and all the outside factors, and recruiting really is beast.

Consider this, at any time a kid could be getting advice from: parents; friends; girlfriends; teachers; AAU coaches; high school coaches; agents (yes, agents), etc.

Coaches will also leak information to try and entice a kid a certain way.

I have no doubt UK made it known Lee was wanting to go pro for Bolden. Another instance could be a coach leaking another kid is about to commit to them, to try and hurry up the kid they already wanted.

Media members get information from coaches that like them and trust them. Media members are also fed BS from certain coaches for misdirection.

Anyways that is my thought for the day.

Have a good Monday.

So you mean high major recruits are not regularly involved in intricate plots to dupe the masses and build their brand?

Oh I definitely get that it happens sometimes. Even seen a little bartering first hand. I'm mainly just being a sarcastic jerk because every kid that stretches his announcement out is considered some shrewd business man on this board. .

you mean all information is simply a "slice in time"?

I am assuming sarcasm in this post, but that is pretty much correct. You can feel great about all the kids you want, but some kids will have all three-five coaches thinking they're #1 on the list. Some kids don't have the heart to tell a coach they bonded with that they're not coming. It's part of the business.

I bet you any of the high profile coaches have a certain person they'd go to the leak information to.

Who do you think leaks Cal to NBA rumors? Think about it. I know of one school personally that has done it.

No I actually agree. I was just trolling a bit. I'm not that well versed on information leaks but I have definitely seen the jockeying for position that college coaches do with AAU coaches. That's when a majority of shady behavior spawns IMO.

From my experience, the shady stuff behaviors comes from "friends of the family" and former athletic parents. I know a whole lot of great dudes who coach AAU.

Actually you could make the argument that I know of a couple sleezy high school coaches in KY that are way worse than about any AAU coach I've interacted with.

I believe that recruiting is a once in a lifetime experience and that everyone likes to be romanced. The process was created to entice a young person to attend your program and give you X amount of years for certain considerations. Most have no loyalty to anyone but themselves when it comes to making a decision. Why does UK get so many highly touted recruits? Because there is a much larger chance for a payday at the end of the day. If you can use the large fan base of one of your suitors to further your agenda then use it. Do anything you can to get a leg up to get the next level if that is your goal. No one is going to hand anyone a free ride. All is fair in love, war, and recruiting.

Really? That's unfortunate as I am just getting settled back in the state and I was looking forward to interacting with the high school coaches in the area. Don't get me started on parents though whole nother story.

No, I was being serious. I understand how recruiting works. I helped a scout run a site for a few years and went to a couple national AAU events with him. Heard a few stories along the way. I understand that information obtained and relayed is only good for that particular moment that it's given. Teenagers are stupid. Hardly anything remains a constant.

Gotcha, you're a smart basketball poster then.

Yeah, recruiting is a dog eat dog business and it can get nasty in the trenches, I'm sure, especially when you're dealing with a protracted recruitment like Bolden's. Following that whole ordeal has made me appreciate guys who just make a decision and don't play games. I'm sure we would have all loved Bolden had he chosen UK, but I gotta say the whole thing became a fiasco by the end. And I don't know if he strung UK along, all the while knowing it was Duke for weeks or even months, but it sure felt that way at the end, with all the games he was playing with it. Wearing the TCU shirt the weekend before, following Brad Calipari on twitter, leaking a potential announcement date, then postponing, and on and on. At the end, I was just glad it was over.

Ultimately you are waisting your time following recruiting gurus , the slice in time proves that . They may have gotten a good slice at the end and get it right but they also could have guessed . You see them get it wrong because they had old slice . If you like their info then there's no real harm but don't invest yourself emotionally in their predictions . Lastly , if you're paying for it then you're a touching idiot .
