1. Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey doing Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey things. Triple-double for Dylan with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. His three 3s in the second half were the key to Rutgers holding off a pesky Columbia team and building on the lead. Ace Bailey's mid-range twos -- he hit about 6 of those shots in a row -- in the first half gave us a solid lead and helped us navigate the zone defense, and he ended up leading the team with 24 points on 11-18 shooting. He was unguardable and his mid-range shot was ON.

2. Dylan's triple-double was the first one since Roy Hinson in 1983. Wow.

3. JMike played his best game as a Scarlet Knight, with 11 points (on 4-8 shooting, including a surprising 2-4 from deep), 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block, and 0 (ZERO) turnovers. He also played pesky defense, getting a number of deflections in addition to the steals.

4. Rutgers (primarily JWill) did a solid job containing Geronimo Rubio-De La Rosa, limiting him to 17 points on an inefficient 7-16 (3-11) from the field.

5. Rutgers had 26 assists on 36 FGs, and 19 of those assists came from Dylan (12) and JMike (7), against just 1 TO.

6. Solid metrics tonight. Rutgers scored 91 points on 80 possessions, for 1.1375 points per possession. On defense, Rutgers only gave up 64 points on 73 possessions, for .8767 points per possession. This should help our KenPom and Bart rankings, and ultimately our NET ranking.

7. On the negative side, other than Sommerville, who provided some inside scoring off the bench (11 points, 5 rebounds), the rest of the bench had a dreadful night shooting. Martini, Hayes, Derkack, and Acuff combined to shoot 4-19, and two of those makes were meaningless late threes by Acuff when the game was already decided and Columbia had already emptied its bench. Hayes and Martini combined to go 1-7 from 3-pt range, and most of those 7 shots were good looks. They MUST hit a higher percentage of those shots going forward. M-U-S-T.

8. IN EDIT - I should mention that I thought Rutgers did a pretty good job defending Columbia's half-court sets. There were very few easy backdoor baskets, despite Columbia running high post picks and options.

Davis was good tonight. Hinson I think had another triple double vs Oregon or Stanford.

To your point, +11 on KenPom. Also KP had the game at 72 possessions
I just add shots and TOs to come up with possessions. We had 76 shots and 4 TOs. Don't actually know if that's the "correct" way to do this.

Dylan is absolutely special.

Great game by Ace.

It seems they both know they have to contribute beyond scoring. I like what I see from both of them.

There were A LOT of possessions where the offense didn't seem to know what to do against the zone defense, like they were surprised Columbia was playing a zone. Did Ace figure out all on his own to go to the foul line spot in the 1st half? I swear this team isn't coached offensively. Didn't matter tonight due to Dylan and the weak opponent.

Still too many shots by guys that shouldn't be shooting those shots. Seeing the same things we've seen thru the previous 12 games. Bad sign.

Columbia isn't good and they are not athletic. Putting up 91 doesn't make me think that we've improved on offense.

We stand around and watch as we put up 3's. We don't get back after made baskets(busy with celebrations). 3 point shooters have no urgency in getting to strong shooting spots. Martini and Acuff need to do better.

Yea I have no idea how to do the math either. BartTorvik has the possession count too and is free if you don’t pay for KenPom. I would imagine free throws and OREBs factor in as well

You have to give Pike credit for that one. I'm sure Ace didn't decide to go to the foul line vs. the zone on his own.

There were a lot of possessions where we didn't put someone on the foul line and we looked disorganized.

Harper would KILL it at the foul line spot and I don't think we did it once.

It looked like the players were left to figure it out.

It didn't matter tonight. It will in future games. Don't expect us to just play smarter in the games we need to.

Nice write ups. Possessions have to be the same or at most 2 different……unless after I left (2 minute mark) the refs decided to go winners

72 was the number.

Adjusted efficiency numbers
1.16 offense
.916 defense

Finally a good defensive score!

Only negative worth mentioning Derkack 3 times late closing out on shooters. Pike was not happy with the last one.

I’m assuming this is something they put a lot of emphasis on in the last week or so because this has been an issue all season and they actually looked really prepared for it.

Always liked him. Our offense runs so much better with him on the floor. Aside from garbage time, he played the majority of the second half.
He did have a good game, but the body of work (the back of his ‘baseball card’ so to speak) suggests he shoots too much. Today the shots fell.

With Martini, Hayes and Acuff brought here for shooting, if Davis ends up one of our go-to perimeter shooters instead then we are in trouble from here on out.

They knew exactly how to play the zone and actually played brilliantly against it. Quick ball movement and penetration. Scored 91 against it. I hope the quick ball movement and weaves continue. We have been awful against zones in the past. Not today.

After the game I came to the realization that our best lineup is actually the one we start (center depending on matchup)

We really are just 5 guys going in to 4 non center positions.

Doesnt give me warm fuzzies

Hayes 2nd half DNP
Acuff just isnt healthy
Derkack makes some plays defensively but has way too many defensive breakdowns

And Derkack just forces it on offense way too much also and just doesn't have a good shot

Dercack is the least of our worries.
not true at all.....he has been a part of the reason we aren't where we think we should be. JaMike starting tells you all you need to know. Today was a microcosm (sp?) of the season. On defense he made 3 really nice plays and 3 terrible half hearted close outs on shooters.

We all know what JaMike is and his limitations. The fact that he actually starts and is now closing games out is a really bad sign.

I think Davis played his best game and over the last 2 I think he’s starting to settle in. There’s a reason several places had him as a big ten breakout player .

we have been here before with J Mike and been let down. He needs to play like this every night

settle down about big 10 breakout player, I do not see that, its going overboard

that said he was very good tonight on both ends especially defensively in disrupting the Columbia offense

Thought the positive "team ball" tone for the evening was established before the 1st media timeout

RU goes up 10, crisp passing and movement on both ends. Ogbole has become much smoother playing D with his feet.

in 14 minutes he had 5 boards and was a presence uderneath on both ends. he also has a nice FT stroke. I was unaware until Austin Johnson mentioned it tonight that he was a football ( soccer) player before starting hoops at 18, which may explain why he still has stone hands.

He is going to be needed once conference play starts, for RU to be successful
