Who else loved "The Monkees"?? As I understand it, that band and TV show were literally cast from an add in a newspaper. They ran an add stating they were seeking people who could play instruments and were interested in acting and they literally assembled that show/band from the people who answered it.

I watched it when I was super young, not a lot but I remember it.

We play "I'm a Believer" and "Stepping Stone," so will be dedicating songs to Peter Tork this weekend.

Saw them at Douglas County Fair back when it was in Waterloo and they had the free outdoor concerts. It was a reunion tour, but the guys were still in their 40s, probably (late 1970s or early 1980s). One of the more fun concerts I ever attended. Still listen to their greatest hits album.

Saw the group live (minus-Nesmith) in the 80's and 90's. One of my fondest memories was a great composition written and performed by Tork. RIP

I was a huge fan in the day. I wish I still had those albums.

Still have a bunch of Monkees LP's. And I found 6 Monkees rereleases and new releases on the Rhino label a few weeks ago for 50 cents each at a thrift store in Lincoln. All in perfect shape. Played them yesterday in honor of Peter Tork.

Some pretty big names in the songwriting business at the time wrote many of their early hits. Neil Diamond, Boyce and Hart, John Stewart of the Kingston Trio, Carole Bayer Sager, Andy Kim, and Neil Sedaka just to name a few.

Michael Nesmith also had some success with his Michael Nesmith and the First National Band, as well as solo. He had a top 40 hit with his song Joanne. However, he was most well known for songs others covered. As was mentioned, he wrote Different Drum and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had a minor hit with his Some of Shelley's Blues.
