Question for those who actually know, not guessing

If they have actually seen these 3 drugs work, why spend a lot of time setting up prolonged trials (mentioned in article)? If you have an epidemic with no "known" cure why would you not start using a know med in mass if it showed some early signs of success? I'm sure there are a lot of folks in Italy that would gladly take any of the 3.

I heard they were having to ration healthcare so much in Italy that they were turning away most of those over 65. Seems like a perfect demographic and you know you could find plenty of volunteers before the virus hits us the way it did there.

Because general antivirals are not tailored to the Coronavirus specifically and further drug design can improve efficacy of treatment.
