Preferred Walk On- Status

There has been some confusion by many over what being a preferred walk on means at NU. Some have said it guarantees you a spot on the 105 practice roster. It does not. Preferred walk on means different things at different Universities.

NU has 85 scholarship kids. This class it looks like the group of "preferred" walk ons will be in the 20 range. Well if 85 and 20 = 105 , would all the other walk ons who are in the 2-3 deep now be excluded from the 105 fall camp?

Yes it is true NU will often times exclude a kicker or punter to create room- or even exclude on occasion a 5th year non contributing scholarship kid- but those are really small numbers- outliers. You have too many walk ons in the 2-3 deep and preferred walk ons from previous years to be able to make it work so all preferred walk ons are part of the 105.

I asked one of my former players who is a preferred walk on-he said to my question: What does preferred walk on mean at NU?
"Hey coach. It means that you were recruited in some way and that they are inviting you to be on the team without going through a tryout process"

Me- Does it mean the player is guaranteed to be part of the 105 camp in the fall?
him- "No it does not"

So what he is saying is a preferred walk on is someone NU recruits to play and does not have to go through a try out proccess. It does not mean they are guaranteed a spot on the 105. Ive had 3 former players in the last 5 years who were preferred walk ons per the Omaha World Herald- only 1 has made the 105 and I dont even think that was in his first year

There are some preferred walk-ons who are guaranteed a 105 spot. Jordan Paup, from Central City, was an example from last season.

You would think a scholarship athlete would be a guarantee to be on the 105, but we’ve seen that isn’t always the case.

I may be wrong, I doubt it but maybe, but the preferred walk on is guaranteed a roster spot and can participate in summer activities. Someone who is not a recruited or preferred walk on has to “try out” and can not participate until classes start in the fall. So a preferred walk on can show up to school in June, use the facilities and the training table all summer. If they aren’t on the 105, then they have to sit out until school starts and the rosters expand.

That may very well be true
HOWEVER it has proclaimed here by a few that "preferred walk-on" status means that they are part of the 105. That is incorrect
All of the preferred walk ons this year- like in years past will not be part of the 105

Your wording here is likely an issue. Rather than saying "all of the prefered walk ons this year- like in years past will not be part of the 105" would be easier to say: NOT all of the preferred walk-ons will be part of the 105, like in years past. I can see in some situations where some do while vast majority dont.

I dont know how it hasnt been clear that preferred walk on only means they are recruited to play w/o a scholly - aka they dont have to try out to be on the team like a true walk on.

Seemed pretty self explanatory to me. Obviously there are far too many for previous years walk-ons and preferred walk-ons to practice too. Obviously The bulk of practices will be made up of Scholly players.

Only thing i am not sure of, does the 105 need to be declared and set in stone until school starts? or can it rotate? Meaning can maybe a lesser contributor get some practices on say tues thurs say for those going for a #3 deep spot? #1's obviously getting full time practice #2's getting more than #3's etc. Would be interesting to know this.

Dwayne Johnson must have had naked pictures of someone. If a Schorlaship player isn't good enough to make the 105 man roster for 3 straight seasons, he shouldn't be on scholarship.
I have it on good authority that is the bosses daughter Stephanie. Keep that on the down low though. I probably shouldn't have even told you.

2018 might be the first time in several years that walk ons will not be starters, may not make the
2 deep on the roster? Only exception may be Conrad & Reimers making the 2 deep? I wonder if
they will have a chance to earn a scholarship if they don’t make the 2 deep? Slight chance that 0 walk ons
will be on scholarship due to #s being tight if we sign 26 players.

It is a good sign that our roster is getting back in shape again with quality players.

.

The deal is- several long time posters have confidently said in other threads that part of the perks of being a perferred walk-on- as it compares to a non preferred walk-on is that the preferred guys are part of the 105- it's guaranteed.

That simply isn't the case now- or in recent history either.

Simple math and logic should have been enough- but a player in the know verified this.
