There has been some confusion by many over what being a preferred walk on means at NU. Some have said it guarantees you a spot on the 105 practice roster. It does not. Preferred walk on means different things at different Universities.
NU has 85 scholarship kids. This class it looks like the group of "preferred" walk ons will be in the 20 range. Well if 85 and 20 = 105 , would all the other walk ons who are in the 2-3 deep now be excluded from the 105 fall camp?
Yes it is true NU will often times exclude a kicker or punter to create room- or even exclude on occasion a 5th year non contributing scholarship kid- but those are really small numbers- outliers. You have too many walk ons in the 2-3 deep and preferred walk ons from previous years to be able to make it work so all preferred walk ons are part of the 105.
I asked one of my former players who is a preferred walk on-he said to my question: What does preferred walk on mean at NU?
"Hey coach. It means that you were recruited in some way and that they are inviting you to be on the team without going through a tryout process"
Me- Does it mean the player is guaranteed to be part of the 105 camp in the fall?
him- "No it does not"
So what he is saying is a preferred walk on is someone NU recruits to play and does not have to go through a try out proccess. It does not mean they are guaranteed a spot on the 105. Ive had 3 former players in the last 5 years who were preferred walk ons per the Omaha World Herald- only 1 has made the 105 and I dont even think that was in his first year
