Grant Hill's mother was enamored with Dean Smith.
Someone else mentioned Jason Williams....which is a good one. He wanted to go to UNC, but they recruited Ronald Curry the year prior, which kind of ended their chances. He was content attending Rutgers, with his good friend Dahntay Jones (who did go there), but his mom basically made him visit Duke. In turn, he wanted to commit on the visit and she had to talk him out of it....basically wanted him to go home and let the initial feeling wear off. Luckily, it never did.
It's funny how recruiting has changed, because then you hear a story like the one of Jay Bilas in the early 80s. He committed and signed without ever stepping foot on campus. The first time he was on campus was during freshman orientation.
Duke made up a lot of ground on Kyrie right from the beginning. We were certainly in play before that in-home with IU and Crean, but something happened that firmly eliminated IU and made us the favorite.
Another one, but this went firmly against Duke, was Brandan Wright. Duke and UK were considered the clear front-runners. He visited UNC, but all the reports from that visit seemed to suggest he wasn't much interested in them. Ty Lawson even gave an interview, and in it alluded to Brandan being quiet and uninterested. Two days later he popped for UNC. Duke fans, and this board, were completely stunned.
