Everywhere in the US has racist people and racist events that have happened. Chicago has plenty. So does Cali. Mississippi does too but we are America’s racist scapegoat.

Because of the 1960s. Birmingham (the whole state, really, with Geo Wallace, but B'ham had Bull Connor) and Little Rock had similar issues, but they seem to have mostly pulled out of the stigma.

And the Chicagoland area has 3.25x the population of the entire state of Mississippi.

Honestly, I don't live in either Chicago or Mississippi, but I used to and I have visted in both in the last couple of years. I have no problem saying it is not the same in either as it was growing up, but I did go through desegregation, busing, and all of the things the late 60's through the 70's as a kid in Mississippi, then worked, played, and lived with all races growing up in Mississipi. I visited my
Dad in Chicago until he retired in the early 90's and moved to Wisconsin.

You are right about Chicago being more diversified genetically. It was fun riding th L through all the different areas that belonged to each "heritage". I remember how the black folks were treated in Chicago and were thought of by the rest, and what those folks in turn thought of Southerners. I found it quite amusing how they reacted when I told them how I played softball, basketball (away from school) and also hunted, fished, and even had meals in my home with "people of color."

I think both places are not perfect, no place in America is, but I have to laugh when I hear folks from the Northern metropolitan areas talk about how racist is in everywhere but their own back yard.

They may not have had avowed racists in office, but they've had some real doozies. Plus, the city is racially segregated like any other city in the US, or even the world - not because it's mandated, but because it's what people choose, or have to do because of income (which is tied to education level).

I suppose that should be expected, given the way the media (even conservative Fox) treats the South, like it's some foreign, third world country. Chances are pretty good that they've never been south of the Mason Dixon line, except maybe to get stoned on spring break in Ft Lauderdale or something similar. So their posts are naturally going to be along the lines of Southern stereotypes. And if they're trying to convince a basketball recruit not to go to MSU, the gloves come off. Of course, we do the same to them, but at least our stereotypes of them isn't that of being a dumb hick redneck. Maybe Southerners tend to travel more than they do (of course we do - we have to go to a civilized world occasionally**).
