Do we care much about these first two guys, Smith and Tatum? Both were interesting backups, but both Fussell and Turner can return so I’d guess they just want to start somewhere.

Also, is Fred David eligible to return? His first year at Clemson was 2020 and then he only played two games in 2023 so he could hypothetically still have a sixth year but I think his socials indicate only one year left.

Not really.

No, I don’t think so.

Not starting, good young guys coming in behind. Gotta clear out the roster spots of this type of guy!
Agreed. In this era, I think you actually want a certain level of controlled attrition. If they’re not in the two deep or super young, it’s probably good to clear them out. Especially with all the crappy prep recruiting we have had recently. Lot of dead weight that needs to move on.

These guys were probably the back half of the two deep, but you can’t just keep filler guys like this around these days, you’ve gotta make room for impact acquisitions,

Anto Saka in the transfer portal per on3
Added him to the list. Hurts. Kinda dumb if he goes to Penn State, you’d think he’d want a different coach than the one he’s underperformed with. But he could be getting paid.

Good for Saka if be gets paid. The NFL is not guaranteed for him after he no showed virtually all of his games at NU. Maybe a change of scenery and a new DC will unleash his potential.

If Kilbane leaves then I’d be more concerned.

Hubbard is going pro, right?

Saka had a disappointing year. I think he was better as a third down pass rusher than every down End. But I only wish him well.

He made an impact in a few games. His biggest play was the TFL and forced fumble against Michigan.

But overall it was surprising how little he impacted games while our other defenders made so many plays.

I also wish him the best and hope he puts it all together.

He was 0-2 for his career in 50+ field goals.

Wonder how much cash he’ll command 🏦
Given what happened to OSU in the Big Ten Championship game, OU in the playoff, ISU in the national championship last night, and the Ravens... somebody should be paying quality money for a highly reliable kicker like Olson.

He was very reliable within 30-39 yards.

He missed two (out of seven) field goals this season under 29 yards, and a few 40-49 yards in prior seasons.

I doubt he will make a lot of money off of NIL, and he has zero future as an NFL kicker.

But he’ll get some cash and a nice head start on a grad degree.

I don't think he's making generational wealth, but a good team who doesn't have a great kicker would be wise to give him low six figures.

Illinois lost their kicker to A&M for almost a $1M check. He’s better than Olson, but I’d expect Olson is still going to get good money.
The last thing any good college team should want is to miss out on a key win, playoff appearance, or playoff win for lack of a reliable kicker in an era when you can just hire one.

Also, @lou v reported on Twitter an hour ago that he spoke with Olson and he's transferring 100% because he already has a master's degree from Kellogg and there isn't a program at NU that benefits his future career path, so he's looking to go somewhere that has whatever program he's looking for. So win one for the people who still point to the impact of academics.

He is not a professional. Think of him as a non revenue athlete when determining what is the best move. This clearly is it. Gods for him,

I still suspect he can and will get paid more than a non-revenue athlete does, but I don't actually know what the kicker market looks like.

Agree with that. My point was he is clearly focused on post football and many players don’t realize they aren’t pro material until they aren’t.

He seemed reliable enough but Braun didn’t want him to kick the long ones. He never kicked a field goal above 50, so I bet he will need to audition to show leg strength. I’m not sure how many he tried above 40 but it wasn’t many. Still, despite missing two in the 20s, he made everything else he tried this year. A lot of coaches will want the consistency.

This is not a function of NU not wanting him back. The player made the decision to pursue play his last year elsewhere. See his Twitter posts.

When did I say NU didn’t want him back? Braun even said he didn’t expect to lose any starters to the portal and I don’t think Braun wanted to lose a starting kicker or an edge rusher. I just meant Braun did not want him to kick a long FG over 50 yards this year. There were a few opportunities but we either punted or went for it. I already read that Jack wanted to go. I just meant he will probably have to show his leg to any team that is looking for a kicker. I personally did not want him or Saka to go.

Olsen is a bigger loss than Saka, although both are replaceable.

How many games did Saka even start?
