Jack which I was thinking because of his size and was getting ready to ammend my post with that.
Might depend on whether he’s viewed as a pass rusher or a run stopper. Dwight Freeney was an inch shorter and same weight. He had a Hall of Fame NFL career terrorizing qb’s though “small” size was an issue vs the run.
Of the kids that have hit the portal, this dude is a least a lateral trade for Jimari and probably better. He is a decided trade up from Wallin and Williams. So now NU has Davis, Cam L and this guy was DEs who can handle business in conference play. As far as interior players, is Sua sticking around and if so, is he a candidate for rotation on the inside? Would be nice to a player who can be a big fire hydrant in the middle.
Agree about the need for a big DT. We also have RVP and Jeudy, who are kind of tweeners between DT's and DE's.

Really... he is a undersized DT that is going to be switching positions to DE. No way can you say for certainty that he is a lateral move to Jimari. Maybe size wise, but I think this one is a stretch and hope I am wrong. Seriously not a one of you in here wanted this guy, and most didn't even know who is is.
No standout stats, just a body to fill the void,,, but I hope he’s got a big upside to help fill our void.
I like the pickup. Sacks were down compared to 2023 but he still led the team in pressures. Can’t argue with 1st team all conference

All Conference at that level is not even honorable mention at the Big 10 level. Indiana was good with James Madison players because the melded well together. They already had the chemistry... this is different. I hope this dude proves me wrong, but I can tell you with 100% certainty this guy is a filler, because we missed on others
You are assuming with 100% certainty he is a filler. Who have we missed on? You are 100% on this. Who do you know as for sure a fact that we have missed on?

Fair enough, just find it funny that some are saying they don’t want P4 castoffs, but give me someone who produces, and now that we apparently have someone who has produced, the goal posts have moved.
based on the statistics referenced when discussing Butler, Williams and Princewill, the only certainty here is that nobody knows what to look at when deciding how to measure "production" along the DL.
I don't mind giving this kid a shot. hopefully he can help.
I’m indifferent, we’ve had plenty of former 4* come through here and do absolutely nothing. If he produces he produces.
His season stat sheet shows 33 tackles, 6 TFLs, 0.5 sack, 7 QB hurries, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced fumble. The year before, he had 21 tackles, 3 TFLs, 2 sacks, 5 QB hurries, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced fumble. It appears that he has a high motor. As a rotation piece I think he'll be just fine. He has two years to play.
The Rivals article says 23.
I don't like loading up on too many lower conference guys. They're usually lower conference for a reason whether that's size, athleticism, etc. The level of competition is vastly different too. I'm sure a lot of our second teamers could be first team all-conference at some of these smaller schools and conferences. I'm sure this guy can be a solid depth guy, but don't know if guys like this will move the needle in the win column.
Freeney was an edge though. This kid, I think, will play more of the typical 3 man line defensive end position. A possible replacement for Butler?
That's a fair assessment. Hard to argue with that. We have some guys on here who act like they was in the room with Rhule and company watching film of him and heard 3 other DTs tell them to kick rocks lol.
I'm interested to see some film of the kid myself. Hard for me to comment either way until I see that. Plus they only know how they plan to use him. Like you said maybe a rotational piece in specific sub packages for 15 snaps a game or so. Just Hard to speculate as of right now.

I concede that it’s just FCS competition, but over the two years he has played, his stat sheet indicates a kid with a high motor. There are plenty of kids with talent who never break into the rotation because they lack the “want”.
