Is Mark Pope our Matt Dougherty?

UNC hired a beloved Alumni who was a decent coach at Notre Dame (22-15) to keep it in the UNC family, because “he gets it”. He spent three years at UNC and the first year he won the conference and won coach of the year, by his 3rd year he went 8-20 and resigned.

Hope I’m wrong but I see similarities.

Pope is not Kenny Payne, I've long thought he was very comparible to Matt Daugherty. It's tough to coach at your alma mater, but that is the assignment. If you're not good enough, too bad.

One difference is Doherty brought in the core of Roy’s 2005 championship. Raymond Felton, Sean May, Jawaad Williams and Rashad McCants. Marvin Williams was a freshman on that team but Roy inherited those four juniors/seniors. I don’t see Pope leaving that kind of talent behind when he’s gone.

These were Doherty’s 3 seasons in Chapel Hill. It’s not even close.

Actually it kinda is to be honest.

Pope at Kentucky is:

24-12 sweet 16

22-14 round of 32

with the third year to be determined.

The situation and results just seem similar to me. Hope we don’t go 8-20 though. Hope he wins it all next year and shuts me up. lol.

Pope does have a 64% winning percentage compared to Mat Dougherty who had a 59% winning percentage prior to coaching at UNC and a 55% winning percentage at UNC. His stops after UNC brought his percentage down to 48%

I said this a couple months ago, perfect comparison cause both hires were “in the family” but we’re not close to winning the sec anytime soon.

Doherty is a PoS.

He would take things a player told him in confidence, and throw it back at the player in front of the whole team.

He once screamed at Sean May for wrecking a season bc May had a broken foot.

There is a reason Doherty hasn't been able to keep a job in any field for the past 25 years.

Not long ago I saw him trying to lecture black people on twitter about what it's like to be black.

The one thing Doherty did in his first season during a crucial timeout against Duke at the end of the game, instead of talking strategy and drawing up a play, he said, "Dukes cheerleaders are ugly." The team laughed and went out and won the game.

Doherty built the foundation for Williams first title at UNC. He was fired because he was an unrepentant *******.

Doherty was more like Billy G. Both guys left a framework for future success but were fired for personality deficiencies.

Doh was better than Pope. He is Kenny Payne

This is ridiculous. Payne won 12 games in two seasons. Pope at least made the tournament twice and won at least a game in both. This is that grudgy stuff I called you out for the other day. Your statement is demonstrably false.

Doherty is a fair comparison to Pope and has many parallels. Doherty had a better regular season year 1, Pope got further in the tournament. Year 2 the wheels fell off for Doherty. They went 8-20. Year two was also bad for Pope but not that level of catastrophic. Doherty went something like 19-14 with an NIT in year 3 and was fired.

Doherty was a better recruiter. Pope won more games in his first two years.

To say Pope is our Kenny Payne is hyperbolic nonsense. To say Pope is our Doherty is completely fair.

He’s Matty D without the ability to recruit a NC roster.

Well, minus the winning a conference and COY.

This guy finished 9th in the SEC and played on Wednesday.

He will have the type season next year that tortures us.
