Rutgers was our name when we tried to emulate Princeton. That ship has sailed. We are no longer trying to be Princeton.

We are a large flagship state institution which is trying to emulate Michigan, UVA, UNC etc. I know it's a sensitive subject but I think we need to embrace our identity as a large flagship state University and stop clinging to a long gone past when we pretended we were Princeton.

Adding "New Jersey" to anything does not increase it's value.

Change the name of New Jersey to Rutgers.
Yes, the college was named for its benefactor in the hopes he would leave the school more in his will. But also because it was a to depart from its colonial roots after the Revolutionary War. You're right, the name New Jersey harkens back to its colonial roots. The name of the state must be changed.

See? The RU Screw was alive and well way back then. Henry Rutgers invented the RU screw.

Change the name of the state to "Rutgers" - best of both worlds!
So that the state can be synonymous with loser?

The man has had naming rights for nearly 200 years because of a $300 donation. That type of coin gets you black lot today. Name the black lot after the cheapskate and name the university after the seventh most populous state

Was ready to vote yes but then I realized I misread the question as “Should Rutgers change its football coach?” Do not change the RU name.

How about we compromise. We can name it after a state but not New Jersey? Deal?

How about NE Arkansas University?

Princeton used to be called The College of New Jersey.

Why not ask them why they switched.

some might find it interesting that in various places where institution are building their reputation and enhancing their identity, they are framing the institution in a unique way - utilizing the distinctive name - and not loading it down with some generic bureaucratic gibberish name
Look at the top tier of the SUNY system - emphasis on the individual institution
Look at how UNC-Charlotte is now being more positioned as "Charlotte"

and some how Auburn, Clemson and Purdue manage to do just fine without having some inane "University of the state of fill-in-the-blank" awkwardly & prominently attached to them

Part of that is because there already is a “University of...” in place.

The University of Wisconsin (outside of the flagship in Madison) system was the first in my recollection to do this.

As NJ contributes less and less as percentage towards RU finances, this is the last thing we should be considering. State share of student tuition is now at 37%, declined from 56% in 2000. The real question is at what level of state funding does it make sense to cut ties with NJ altogether. NJ has to be costing RU with their politics and BS. That money is not free.

Southern New Hampshire University?

Oh, wait. Nevermind.

Or merge with a great online university and take their name?

How about we just choose "Noter Dame"

Most of their front running fans won't know the difference. Maybe we pick up some extra donations that way.

The name change argument has some merit but (if it was going to happen) should have happened at the time we officially became the state university. Too late now........the ship sailed a long time ago. “Rutgers name shall never die.”

If naming rights and money is all that matters, why not sell the name of the university to the highest bidder each year? For example, your degree could read, "The Board of Governors of the Poulan Weedeater's State University of New Jersey confers upon Joe Smith the degree of Bachelor of Science." Then it would be someone else the next year. After all, what's in a name?

Queen's College was changed to Rutgers to honor the man who gave the money to take the school from "defunct" from 1816-1825 to an active college again. Also to honor a man who fought as a Captain in the Revolutionary War and as a Colonel in the New York State Militia in the War of 1812. It wasn't done as a naming rights deal. The hope he would give more is something that every university wishes from friends and alumni. That wasn't a hoped-for reason when they changed the name.

All I know is that this is not a topic at Rensselaer, Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and a few other prestigious places.

These are the types of posts after reading one says, “Poor, poor Margaret. That woman must be a saint.”
