2n half starters: Toomey, Grant, Henderson, Brooks, Aarnisalo

Harris has only 6 min, looks like we are trying to rest her as well. She has kept her warmups on like Nivar.

I know Pitt really stinks, but it's good to beat the crap out of the teams you're supposed to beat the crap out of.
And sadly it matters for NET rankings.

According to @ZinfanHeel's research we are favored in the 30's in the computer rankings, win by less that that and we will take a little ding.

A certain team down 15-501 would have all five starters at 30+ minutes in this game and would never play their two walk-ons.

I’m this close to starting a GoFundMe for offseason defensive training for Hull so maybe Banghart will play her in Q1 games. We need that offensive shot in those games. The defense is the only thing I can think is keeping her on the bench in big games…?
She plays better defense than Brooks, doesn’t seem to affect Brooks play time. Hull needs to work on ball handling and shooting off the dribble, right now she’s only a standstill shooter!

Heels up by 31 with 2 min left...

Holding Mel Gibson GIF

really impressed with Liza's ability to create off the dribble. She will be good.

Human voters punish teams with great defenses. WVU and UNC both great examples of defense-heavy teams that got jilted on hosting in recent years.
Agree- the one knock on WVU was their 2-7 Q1 record last year. This week looms large…. Make or break for host… win both= 4-5 Q1, and 12 Q1/2 wins, T5 in the country.

Well, we won but not by the margin expected. Still, we got to play some of our guys further down the bench. That's always a good thing. My HS career I was so far down the bench the jokes were that the coach needed binoculars, a set of semaphore flags, a walkie-talkie, a messenger boy on a bike, etc. etc. if he wanted to put me in a game. Against an awful team like Pitt, what's the harm?

Yay Leila Hull! We have been waiting for the former Indiana POY to make her presence felt. Hope this doesn't put her into the TP.

Scores of interest: Virginia beat Louisville and Moo U is up on Syracuse by 13 halfway through the 4th.

LH does do a very good job of boxing out for rebounds, and yes, I agree the girl can shoot it. CB needs to play her some just for shooting and help out with spacing on the offensive end. She needs to work on sliding her feet more which is lateral quickness in the off season. If she knows how to play angles while she is playing defense, this can help compensate for her lateral quickness some.

Yes. She surely deserves more time on the floor. I did not notice a huge issue with her defense. Brooks is making progress on defense, but still a work in progres.

Hull got major minutes due to the opponent. We sat Nivar completely and Harris played 6.

hull would stater for most ACC teams, she is great. But same question as always: who you going to sit? Who gets less minutes?

but the Pitt game was excellent foreshadowing for next year. We just saw what a UNC team with Nivar and Harris graduated looks like. Plenty of minutes for all of the other wings. When portal season opens, that is what CB will point to to her young players.

I think moving forward Hulls minutes will depend on the opponent that we are playing. Shooting is something all teams must have in order to win games. Having two or three on the court on the offensive end definitely opens up the inside game. Hull is tall and she does box out and rebounds well. I can see Hull playing in the next two games if the LG and NB shots are not falling.

I would have to try to get Laila some good open looks in addition to Lanie and Nyla B. She has a talent
for shooting the ball and her in the game would give UVA lots to think about.

This season's 3pt shooting among wing forwards:
  1. Hull 39%
  2. Brooks 37%
  3. Zubich 36%
  4. Nivar 35%
  5. Henderson 29%
  6. Harris 18% (small sample set)
  7. Queiroz (no attempts)
Hull clearly leads the way. Only Grant is doing better. But her separation between Brooks and Nivar is pretty minimal. (Hull does shoot in smaller windows than Nivar) If we need more shooting it would be done by pulling Harris out and playing with only one post player, instead of needing to pull out Nivar or Brooks.

I think Laila can be a great 6th man/instant offense type for the Lady Tar Heels.

Teams are going to have to pay close attention to her on the arc creating more space for others.

I like the way this team is developing.

We just have to get it done on the court.

I think Hull can play in stretches just to help to open up the floor more and to help create better driving lane. I would play her in stretches throughout the upcoming games. CB and Staff can and will determine this.

Laila is a potential game changer for the Tar Heels with her ability to shoot the 3.

Other teams are going to have to dedicate some defense to keep her in check.

Aarnisalo, Grant, Hull, Brooks and Toomey are a great 3 point shooting line up.

I guess one can kind of forgive people for being prisoners of the moment. in conference play, Hull is shooting 43%, best on the team - but that's only on a sample size of 28 attempts. still seems like a sizeable upgrade shooting-wise over Nivar (31% vs ACC) and Brooks (28% vs ACC)... but a coach is always going to trust the bigger samples unless they've seen a reason to believe the smaller ones.

I think you can tell Laila's teammates all know how deadly she can be shooting 3's by the way they always
look to get her open shots when she is in the game. Players know, they see it everyday in practice and shoot arounds. Get her some shots. She can be a game changer. JMO.

Great post.

One confounding variable though is that a player like Hull is not taking shots against good teams who know how to defend and she is not going to be taking bad late clock shots because someone has to shoot it.

Such seamingly minor variables like this can have particularly large consequences in small sample sets.
In just 28 attempts you get 5-10 more wide open shots than your 30 min every game teammate and thus make 1 more out of that 28 then your 3pt% could jump from 36% to 40%.
Conversely, Two missed random half court shot or other wild buzzer beater attempt in just 28 attempts could similarly drop your percentage.

3397 I think what you are saying could be true about Laila and making 3's.

LH is growing into the job I think.

I hope she can bring that making shots ability into big games soon. She obviously does it in practice
against our team and practice squad so it is just a part of maturing as a player.

Hopefully she can show us some of that beautiful shooting talent vs UVA and onward.

You made a good point. Coach CB knows her players better than any of us fans.
