So I figure the guy is around 42 years old and he is quitting his job, must be nice. Maybe he can write some more books and be successful, hope so, always seemed to be a straight-up guy. Looks like a case of the good talent leaving print media while the hacks stay behind and rearrange the chairs on the Titanic.

He will be writing something somewhere, it just won't be daily and may not be entirely sports related.

Find the leaker! We can’t let the public know exactly what Pelini is like!
Everyone knew what he was like. We know what everyone is like.

Us fans are all smarter coaches than the coaches and all coaches hate the annoying *** fans. It is a tale as old as time.

World Herald is trimming everywhere. I don’t think he just decided to quit in a vacuum. There’s context. Likely that he’s being forced out and can’t say that due to terms of his severance.

For sure...probably hoping to get a radio gig, maybe podcasting?

There really is no use for the OWH anymore. So much independent stuff out there. I feel like you are better off being on your own at this point.

Print media is dead, and tv media should be as well. 99% of them have been indoctrinated (both ways), to take offense and over-react to everything. Journalistic integrity is now “who is the loudest Karen”. They are a hive mindset.

I think the only one that seems to be doing "well" is the Athletic, I know that is not print but it seems like the only one that is gaining readers.

quite a run

He won't be easy to replace. Literally. I bet they either cut his position or hire some kid straight out of college who's willing to work for less than they could make working their way up at Walmart or McDonald's.

Agreed - the OWH today is a mere shell of what it once was, but back in the day when newspapers and magazines were raking in tons of advertising revenue, they had much larger budgets than the online outlets of today - there's no free lunch - smaller journalism budget = lesser journalism.

Dirk is part of a dying breed in sports media. He was researching stories while others are focused on generating clicks.

Honestly, quite a bit of the material I read about on my favorite teams on the web is of a standard that quite a few of us could meet. Pull some quotes off Twitter, write a decent headline and you're 3/4 of the way there.

That's exactly right. With Lee Enterprises buying up just about all of the daily newspapers in the state, it won't be long before every local paper looks exactly the same except for the front page of the news and sports section.

I have to wonder.....if the NU programs (the big 3 mens) were enjoying ANY kind of success, would guys like Dirk be inclined to stick around or maybe be generating more interest in their stories? I remember even as recent as Bo's run of 9 and 10 win seasons, I used to read EVERY take, Shatel, Dirk, Sipple, Sam, Vogel(s), etc. Every game. What I did all night after the game, or 1st thing next morning. I used to subscribe to Hail Varsity magazine. Now, never. Dont care.

Now I spend my husker related reading time on these boards. Its more interesting watching the big dogs here fight with each other than it is to read about how bad the team is. The sports media industry in this market has got be be struggling right along with the teams. Maybe it gets better with wins. It has to. Right?

When I got laid off after 26 years at the same company, I got on Facebook and said I was retiring. No sense saying anything negative when getting a huge severance payment to go away.

We loved the world Herald but after what seemed like 100% price hikes every other month we finally pulled the plug and the funny thing is the following month they called and offered us a better rate than what we Had when we canceled.... But by then we move On to the Wall Street Journal so we passed

I’m envisioning a Travel Channel show following the adventures of Dirk and BO as they travel together across the highways and biways of this great country in a large RV.

This was my thought too. Adam Carriker just quit his gig with the OWH too. Digital media is the ticket right now. Put your stuff out there and own it. Make bank if people enjoy it. They both even have built in audiences whenever they announce it.

I get that Carriker is a national treasure around here, but I cant stand watching his show.

You can make a lot of money selling rage these days. A lot of people are looking for voices that can articulate their particular rage subject, so a lot of people are more than happy to sell it to them.

Measured responses are boring. No money in boring.

Dirk was the stat master for the Huskers. He'd always pull out some crazy numbers for his articles and relate them to successes (or mostly failures). Will be missed!!

Dropped the OWH years ago after they were bought out. The content just got less and less, and yeah online stuff was often just as good.

Last time I saw an OWH it was more like a pamphlet than a newspaper.

As a sophomore journalism student back in the early '80s at UNL, I was in a beginning journalism class with the late, great Bud Pagel. As is standard procedure, Bud went around the room asking about our pasts, our interests, our families and our career goals.

Bud then asked a young woman about her career goal.

Gretchen: "I want to be a TV anchor or host!"

Bud: "Oh, honey. That's not journalism. That's show business!"

Reading the Sunday paper since I was a kid was a hard habit to break, but like you said, the price kept going up and the content became less and less.

It's cool that he's free to do whatever the hell he wants for the rest of his life, but yeah, it's not good.
Agreed. Good for him and it would be a cool way to pass the time. I'd probably do the same thing and get criticized the same way.

I still always found it comical how right before the combine he cut like .3 tenths off his 40, gained like 35 pounds of solid muscle all by just eating chicken breast and broccoli......

His wife must have a good-paying job, how do you just quit your job age 40, especially one like journalism that already doesn't pay much.

I am guessing it was "here, take this chunk of change and leave because we are almost closing up shop"
