i believe there was talk of Eddie taking the team overseas (Spain?) during the off season.

Wonder if this would still be an option. Would be a great time for the new coach to bond with the team and evaluate and teach. Also would give extra "games" for Corey and Nigel to work together, get Freeman back into games, give our bigs more experience, and blend in any new recruits.

I was wondering about this myself earlier today. I hope they can still travel to Spain.

It's very beneficial to a team with a new coach, or a team with a lot of new players. But perhaps coach has other ideas.

Read where the press conference will be Tuesday.

Isn't there a rule where you can do these trips once every X years?

If so, I'd think a new coach would want to wait until next year or beyond. Too much to do now.

That's why I said perhaps coach has other ideas. He has recruiting to do, both current players, verbal's, and future players. as well as staff selection, admin, networking, fund raising etc

Is this true? Did the team really plan to travel to Spain? Because as soon as I read this the hair on the back of my neck went up. Has the Promosport & Tours S. L. mess been discussed on this board? If so, I apologize for posting, but a number of schools (Seton Hall, Louisville, Minnesota, OK State, NCState and others) are in the cross hairs right now over the recent Sports Illustrated article linking the recruiting of Canarias Academy basketball players and booking tours to Spain through Promosport. As Thiam and Doorson played at Canarias, and Eddie planned to take the team to Spain, it kind of seems Rutgers is involved also. Again, I apologize I misssed an earlier discussion of this. There is no real fire yet over the Promosport/Canaria, story, but there is plenty of smoke. After recent events even the appearance of something improper is something we should avoid.

There is precedent for this. in 1988 Wenzel took the team to Spain in the off season. that was before he even coached a game for RU.

There is nothing illegal about the Promosport thing, so that's nothing for anyone to worry about... Just more evidence to throw into the college basketball is a big business pile. But really no different than when guys like Ernie Lorch, Rob Johnson, and going way back, Al Lewis -- yes, Grandpa Munster was a hoops street agent -- were steering plays here and there. You also know guys like World Wide Wes don't send guys to different places for unselfish reasons. It's all a part of the game.

Since you can only take one trip every four years, the new coach would probably wait a year before taking a trip like that. Gotta know the lay of the land on your own turf and establish a sense of order before you spend two weeks taking the team to Europe that you can't repeat for several more years.

Nice profile pic BK. I also hope Brad finds a spot on the bench, or in athletic department. He is an RU lifer. When coaching changes happen, no one ever thinks of how many people get affected from the basketball support staff.

I've got a little Facebook campaign going on my personal page and the CC page...over 3500 views so far, with participation from a former coach and over 20 former players. RU needs Brad Wachtel!

I know the EJ staffers very well. It's hard to see these guys go, because I count them among our friends. Wherever they end up, it will be a pleasure to stay in touch. They've done so much for Janet and I personally...they've earned my gratitude and then some.

I agree there is nothing illegal about this, but there is potential for a lot of negative spin in the local media given that two New Jersey Universities are involved in it. We really don't need any more negative press. While no improprieties have been proved, the whole deal has a bad smell to it.
