Manhattan is horrible so far this year. I also don't think we would have a shot at Griffin. Robert Morris is struggling now also. I like Lonergan but he is from DC and seems quite happy. He seems like he really has things together. We could only dream to get him or a guy like him.

I think Masiello is a worth a shot, I read his contract hasn't been renewed and it runs out after this year, they are coming off of 2 straight NCAA appearances but I think his courting with USF and that mess with not graduating has complicated negotiations.

After grabbing Ash from OSU for football, I think Hobbs looks to someone from the coaching tree of the likes of Izzo or K - Dane Fife or Nate James?

I have to put aside my TR bias towards Joe Scott and assume Lonergan as a highly paid, DC local aint uprooting to come here. Otherwise, I'd much rather stick with 1 more year of EJ. Granted, he has work to do on and off the court, but that's where I stand now.

Even though Miller recently signed a contract extension through 2022, he is not going to be at Dayton forever. He'll jump soon enough. If we can get shovels in the ground for the practice facility by the end of next year and offer him a guaranteed 5-year, $10 million contract he'll listen. He'll listen hard. Real hard.

The question is... does RU care enough about basketball to make the offer? One thing we have in our corner now is that Hobbs loves hoops.

FYI: Miller's salary last season was $652,049.

I think it will be hard to get a young guy like Miller even with a boat load of money. He can get similar money at less of a dumpster fire. More to happiness than money, these guys want to win and I think it is career suicide to come to this situation right now. I think the focus needs to be on facility upgrades over the next 5 years as opposed to a highly paid coach.

That's just the portion that Dayton pays. There is a private collection he is paid as well, kind of like the Koch Brothers do with Marshall at Wichita State, that brings Miller's salary to $2.2 million.

The salary, support from administration and fan base is why Miller has passed on some good gigs in the past.

Hobbs may wait to see how Ash does next year and if things are looking positive, then maybe a similar approach for basketball. In that context, the Izzo tree makes a lot of sense. Don't know who has shaken from this tree, but worth a look. The Coach K tree has been fairly mediocre, although he himself is a top coach/recruiter.

I will go on record that there is a 0.00% chance of Eddie not being our head coach next year.
Of course, you're probably right.

I think the only way EJ gets the heave-ho is if RU continues to get beaten to a pulp in B1G play. If we lose by 20+ points every game, Hobbs will be forced to make a move.

It will be extremely difficult to hire an established head coach with a decent gig and current success. You would think a guy like FGCU's Joe Dooley a decent candidate. But if you're him, do you leave southwest Florida to finish out your career as a miracle-worker? Best shots:
  • an assistant, with recruiting chops, from a big-time program who wants to make his mark
  • redemptive hire, like Colorado State did with Larry Eustachy and North Carolina State did with Mike Gottfried; perhaps ex-Alabama coach Anthony Grant or Texas Southern's Mike Davis

Do you guys think there is anyone we could realistically hire who would bring instant excitement to the program and draw people back to the RAC?

I feel like the program might be so far down and irrelevant, that even a coach like Archie Miller would only excite the die hard fans. The rest of the fan base might not come back until the team actually starts winning.

Maybe Hobbs can work a deal with OSU's AD, Gene Smith.

Say......Ash and Greg Paulus for Schiano and Eddie Jordan?

I would say you wrong,,,,I certainly wouldn't put it in the likely category at all but if this team continues its current trajectory it will finish non conference 6-7 and even if we give them one conference win that's makes it 7-25..which would be the worst season in the modern era for RU hoops and with a lot of this likely blowout losses, I would raise that 0% to 40%

The only names worth considering on this list are Miller and Lonergan, and RU virtually has no shot at Miller. King Rice may turn out to be a good coach, but he needs more of a track record before becoming a serious candidate. RU would be much better off bringing in a coach from a solid mid-major conference like the A-10, rather than taking a coach from a low major program or an assistant (like FHJ was when RU hired him) without previous HC experience.

As for EJ coming back, I think he will most likely come back next year provided RU does not go winless in the B1G schedule and fall to Monmouth and FDU. Even though I have serious doubts with EJ, I would much rather bring him back if RU is going to make another cheap hire.

The question is not who so much as the finances. What can Hobbs offer? Our situation won't scare off a coach confident in his abilities if the salary, money for staff and recruiting are there.

Do you think Hobbs learned anything from his Willard hire? He seemed to go with a similar hire with Ash.

Are you saying Ash is a similar hire to Willard?
(If so, we would be screwed)

I don't see that comparison at all.
(Sorry if I misread you)

Young coach who was an Assistant at a high level program in Louisville.

The difference being that Willard also had HC experience at Iona.

I'm not sure if I'm comparing the future success of the two. "Learn something" may be unfair as well. I am hoping there is more money for bball since we didn't go super big name HC in football. I think bball is in more of a need of an over pay a proven big name college HC than football.

Mike Lonergan and Archie Miller are the only ones on there I'd give a wiff to.
I doubt Rutgers could afford their salaries and what is the incentive to come to Rutgers right now with the lack of facilities to attract recruits?
