They are a mess right now.

They are too small, to have the general lack of quickness on the team. The are playing one forward and four guards in the starting lineup, but are slower than most of their opponents. They have some skill and some shooters. But everybody is playing them really tough on the arc, because they have nobody who can drive past a defense to take the ball to the basket.

And their lack of size and quickness is showing up on the defensive end. OSU hasn't been able to score on anybody. They scored at will.

The Sooner women will be lucky to finish in the top five of the conference. With all the players they brought back, they ought to be better, but right now, they're a mess. They are the worst team fundamentally that Sherri has had in at least five years. I usually watch most of their games, but the last several, they weren't worth the time. I'm not sure what's going on, but they've definitely taken a step back. It started with the second half against A&M and there has been precious little improvement since. KK Williams is a good solid post player. But she's really a four and most conference schools have players four or five inches taller that she's matched up against. It makes it hard for her to stay out of foul trouble.

Carter was hurt with a groin injury. She's back, but she has no explosiveness. She's never had great fundamentals, but now, her lack of quickness leads to lots of transition going the other way because she turns it over way too much.

I'm not sure how they fix it. Little is in a shooting slump. Manning is in a horrible shooting slump. But a big part of that is the lack of open looks. It's a structural problem in the offense, and the lack of anybody able to take the ball to the basket. So far, the most disappointing team Sherri's coached in close to a decade.

Yeah, it would be in bad form to say they suck, so I won't...however they're pulling what could be called a perfect vacuum...

The OU women are 12-4, 3-2 in conference play. How good are they? Let's look at how they have done against the top teams in the NCAA rpi.

#3 Baylor: lost at Baylor
#9 BYU: beat BYU by 26 in Norman
#16 Washington: beat Washington in Seattle
#28 Oklahoma State: lost to OSU in Stillwater
#31 Texas A&M; lost in Norman
#35 Utah: beat Utah at a neutral site in the Bahamas

OU fits in this group somewhere. BYU also beat A&M. OU had one bad loss, to North Texas in Norman. Then, they won about ten in a row, oer some decent teams: BYU, Boston College, Utah, Washington.

They are in a slump right now, primarily because a key outside shooter from last year, Peyton Little, has suddenly gone cold. Go figure. When I day cold, she didn't score a point in Stillwater. Curiously, we are probably a better team than OSU, as well as A&M. Just hit a dry spell with Peyton.. It hurts when you lose a key scorer in Carter. It hurts more when you lose two.

Kay Kay is not a four. She has no face up game, nor is she quick enough to cover a four. She is a feared five---when she plays intelligently. After five years, Kay Kay still lapses into trying to use her hands to slap at shots, resulting in fouls. When she plays intelligently, OU is pretty good. But, she, or her sophomore backup, Vionise Pierre-Louis (Vivi) has to be good. Sometimes, Vivi has a great game. She is learning more rapidly than Kay Kay did.

The best athlete on the team is probably Maddie Manning. Chad Thrailkill has said that they expect her to become the best player in the Big Twelve. She just hasn't hit on all cylinders yet. She can drive, and she can hit from outside. She, too, is in a shooting slump. But, she still can score by getting fouled. She also is a good shot-blocker, who gets a lot of tipped passes with her very long arms. She held down Coleman, a key OSU scorer because Coleman couldn't shoot over her. Unfortunately, not everyone did as well.

Gabbi was the guard on the gold medal winning US team this summer. So, she has played like a HS freshman this Fall. It's like she had never seen a court before. How did this happen?

The wheels right now are off this team, and it is not understandable. It makes no sense. But, wait a minute. This team is #19 in the nation, 12-4, and 3-2 in the Big Twelve. Prior to beating us, OSU was in a slump and had been totally destroyed in two games. So, they played over their heads in Stillwater against us, their first victory over us in two or three years. It was one game.

They are not as good as years past, and quite honestly I can't put my finger on it.
Actually, if they were to start shooting well, they are probably better than last year's team. There is more depth, and we simply did not have the potential that we have this year. If Peyton---or Maddie----were to begin hitting threes again, this team would be pretty good. Treece, Edwards, Vivi, Penzo, and Kellogg have shown some things at times from the bench. Consistency is a problem.

As we are always posting on this board -- next year. Saw this in Houston newspaper.

Cypress Woods’ Nancy Mulkey earned McDonald’s All American selections Sunday night. The 6-foot-9 Mulkey, who helped Cypress Woods to a Class 6A state championship last season. Mulkey will be in Oklahoma’s frontcourt next year.

The team needs only a Baker Mayfield. I think that OU football was a 7-5 team that had one player emerge to have them rise above. The women's team really needs that one player.

We had a good team last year. But, Peyton, Gioya, Kay Kay, and Gabbi were limited. When they rose to their top, they were second in the Big Twelve. But, when the season-ending tournaments came around, they no longer stood that tall.

The hope was that Maddie would be that X-factor this year. She has the ability to dominate the floor. Unfortunately, she still seems somewhat limited by her injuries. She has shown at times that she is unstoppable, like in the first five minutes of the BYU game in which she blew out a good team with individual effort. Since then, she has had moments, but not enough. We need that type of talent to rise to the top.

This team will go as far as Maddie rises, and that could be high. Regardless of what seems to have happened, this could be an Elite Eight/Final Four team if Maddie were to emerge and take the pressure off of Peyton and Kay Kay.

I agree with you about Williams. She has no face up game. But she is the size of a good college 4. She is also slower than Christmas. There have been games when from the tip, she was the last person up the floor nearly every trip on eight end. They were having to cover for her on the D end. The slump really started when Carter returned to the lineup. She is a terrific scorer. But right now, whe is not very good on either end, and she is getting more minutes than OUr third big girl, Treece, who seems to be on a short leash. She is the one girl on the team with enough size and width, to play against a big, who can step out and make an open 16 footer. She has even made a trey or two. But unless she is being dominant, she gets short playing stints. She is not that quick, but neither are Williams or Pierre Louie. And unlike them, she can shoot a decent number at the line.

They have as a team developed some really poor fundamentals. Sitting back when catching a pass. And way too many wished in passes. They stunk it up at TCU for three quarters before the Frogs lack of depth and some breaks from the stripes turned the game around.

Maybe the conference is just really good. But they are too slow to be playing four guards and a short post player. I know that Manning can be a matchup problem. But she is like Williams. They both seem to be in foul trouble a lot.

The trey shooting is not going to improve until the get open looks. They are having to catch the ball outside of their shooting range, and nobody seems able to create their own shot.

Bedlam in Stillwater was an embarrassment. And they really have not played ba complete game for 40 minutes since conference play started. I cannot imagine they will be in the top 20 after Saturday.

Well, after Saturday, they were 19th.

I think the AP voters have no place else to go. Nobody is better other than those at the very top. Everyone is getting knocked off. Last week, the top twenty-five had eleven teams lose, mostly to unrated teams.

The problem is movement. In order to get open shots, you need to have an in-out passing thing, which Sherri tried to create, or have movement with some penetration. Unfortunately, Kay Kay and Vivi are not good at passing back out. It's more likely to be intercepted than get to a shooter, often because they don't keep the flow going. They look for every possible way for them to get themselves a shot without kicking back out.

Maddie, Gabbi, and T'Ona can dribble-penetrate. But, Gabbi and T'Ona don't look to dish when they run into a wall. They don't look around while making their move. Maddie is likely to see someone on the wing. They aren't. The officials also tend to call Maddie for charging when it isn't charging. She is tall, and she gets there before they are set. They called a charge on her last week in which the player was still moving, and her feet were planted firmly on the line after she moved, negating a charge.

But, everyone seems to be watching rather than cutting. Maddie gets the ball and looks to find a lane. None exists, primarily because none is created with movement. Move---create lanes----enable penetration and kickouts. They need to do one thing----move.
