OT - Tagging UTVs/SxSs/Golf Carts in MS

Previously, it was my understanding that UTVs/SxSs/Golf Carts, etc., could not be be tagged in MS. However, on Saturday, I saw a very small (fairly new) golf cart on campus with a MS tag. Additionally, I saw SxSs (tagged in Alabama) running an Uber type service in the cotton district.

Any thoughts on this issue? Did the golf cart just "slip through" the registration process? If a SxS is registered in another state can it be operated on MS roads? Or does Starkville have a separate municipal ordnance covering these? All appeared to have working lights, seat belts, etc.

Could be a class called LSV, low speed vehicle. Can be legally tagged and driven on streets across the US with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less. Vehicles must go between 20-25 mph, have headlight, tail lights, brake lights, seat belts and turn signals amount other things. Some states require more like defrosters etc. and some states and locales relax the LSV and allow golf carts. LSVs have a VIN and can be registered and tagged. Very familiar with them as the company I work for makes a few varieties

I seen them tagged and operated on public streets in GA and TN. MS is missing out on a decent bit of money. Let them be registered for use in limited situations.

The ones that are tagged on campus are registered as LSV. (It’s a federal law. Street legal on all roads with a speed limit of 35mph). If it does not come from the manufacturer as an LSV, there is no inspection process in MS to get it certified.
However, you can make it legal (mirrors, seat belts, blinkers, etc) and then some places will give you a new VIN and MCO (for a fee: $400-$1000) that you can take in and get the tag.
After that, It’s treated just like a car. You have to get insurance AND You will need a parking pass to park on campus during events.

And if it’s electric you have to pay an additional $200 per year taxes when you renew your tag because you don’t pay gas road taxes at the pump. My golf cart tag is more than the wifes Mercedes tag. The golf cart place in Mathiston has a manufacturers license and can sell you a street legal cart or can convert your existing cart to legal status and give it a VIN number.

Mine does but it’s not required for a LSV to be legal. The state is going to get those road taxes. It applies to all electric vehicles and I can see it increasing as more people shift away from internal combustion engines.

In many rural areas in the state, SxSs are operated on public roads. If MS would tag them (like many surrounding states), the state could make a tidy sum of tax revenue. I can operate mine on public roads without much worry of LE hassling me, but I would pay the money to make it legal (by tagging it).

IN SC you can tag them but you must add a blinker kit. They can be driven on two lane roads within 5 miles of your home between dusk and dawn.
