OT: Spotted Lantern Flies

Have only seen a couple of them since people first started talking about them.
Suddenly today I'm seeing 15 or 20 of them around. i guess it has something to do with the rain and the sudden rise to the 70s of the temperature. Pain in the ***.

They were everywhere in Jersey City until about a week ago, it was like you were walking on dorittos with a constant crunching. Had one fly in our window on the 29th floor.

I am seeing a lot of crickets. They hang around by the door when it gets cold outside. Are they also on the kill list?

Birds have to learn to eat them. Ground critters too. They have plenty of food and no current predators on this continent.. that has to change.

Hoboken/JC has been a disaster since they hatched this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if 10,000 or so were killed outside of my building in the last few months.

Big day for them on the boardwalk between Belmar and Asbury. Lots of casualties but they just keep coming.

need to increase the praying mantis population.
Lantern Flies are on their menu and spiders are supposed to dine on the ones that get tangled in the web they weave..
It's been said Chickens will eat that bug, but can't say it's chicken feed.😀

Been dealing with them since 2019-20 when we had them bad west of Philly. We haven't had as many of them in the past couple years but they are still around.

This is the time of year where they sit on trees, mate and lay their eggs. They are easier to kill now than during the summer, you can do it with your bare hands. If you don't do it now, you will need to scrape the gray smears off the bottoms of tree branches in the winter/spring before mid-May when the eggs hatch.

They don’t seem to be as bad near me either. I live in Burlington Twsp.

Last year was way worse.

I only saw a half dozen dead ones this morning.
Hopefully it's over until May......when the next batch hatches.

Have a few here and there but no real infestation. We're pretty vigilante on scrapping off the egg sacs from the fruit trees in the orchard. I think the dormant oil might have an effect on the sacs as well. Also Dragon flies might kill them, there's been reports of this and we're a haven for Dragon flies with all the pig wallows.
