I’m looking at finally getting my elbow fixed. It Needs Tommy John plus cleaning...and maybe more. It hurts to grip the toilet paper.....Ive hit the wall with it.

Question: Is it possible to also have a light shoulder surgery on top of this? Same arm.

Id rather rehab Both at once. Is this possible?

Shoulder rehab can be pretty brutal by itself, depending on the extent of the injury and surgery. Consult a PT to be safe.

Don't know, but the pain might be more than you'd want to put up with.

And it could be an insurance issue. I get regular shots in my back for disc issues (and therefore sciatic nerve pain), and insurance won't let them do two shots at the same time, for some reason. Surgery could be the same.

Shoulder rehab is absolutely brutal depending on what needs to get fixed. I would not want to rehab anything else at the same time. Plus, there are certain exercises you would have to do that would be problematic if your elbow is out of commission.

Had torn labrium surgery, would not recommend unless absolutely necessary and definitely not two for one.

Listen to these guys, lettuce, that's a whole different world than 2 for one knee replacements. One will affect the rehab of the other. Consult the rapist.

HA Thanks for the advice, all.
hopefully the shoulder is something I can rehab without surgery. Regardless, I figured this winter would be as good of a time as any.

After any physical labor, the right side of my body looks and feels like a 30$ Walmart combo that just did it’s first tour to Grand Isle.

Wife had a similar surgery on her shoulder before we left Mississippi in 2007. Still bothers her today. Some doc in Columbus that used to do surgery on MSU players.

That would likely be Jones, he did my shoulder. It took me over a year to rehab it. While rehabbing the surgically repaired shoulder the other one started bothering me from double the use. Swore that I’d never have it cut on. I started doing the exercises that I had learned in therapy on that shoulder. The Dr wrote me a prescription for 500mg of Naproxen, I can’t do the narcotics. I also started a regimen of Osteo Biflex and Krill oil along with the Naproxen and exercise. After a few weeks of the Naproxen, Osteo Biflex, and Krill Oil I noticed improvement. I’m currently pain free in that shoulder with no surgery.

I've had two surgeries on the same shoulder from football ... 1st they put a Pin in then 20 yrs later they took it out. I don't care to ever go through another one .... I thought I was going to have to have surgery on the other but the surgeon wanted to try a couple of shots (administered by a needle suited more for an elephant) but that with some physical therapy prevented the need for surgery .... you might try this instead of the surgery because Shoulder Surgery SUCKS

I had the "shoulder injury trinity": torn labrum, rotator cuff, and biceps tendon. The surgery itself is cake....four small incisions and a scope. But the rehab? Absolutely brutal. I actually had a knee replaced in 2014 and the rehab for that wasn't half as bad as it was for my shoulder surgery.

Damn that sounds terrible. What the hell dis you do to tear it up?

So I guess they can fix box sides of my elbow at once? I would think so.

I messed up my shoulder playing flag football. Took a spill and tried to catch myself as I was going down and pretty much shredded my shoulder.

I had a rotator cuff injury some years ago as a result of lifting weights (bench press, shoulder popped and collapsed). Couldn't lift a coffee cup with that arm, and would wake up at night in agony. Dr prescribed naproxen and it did no good. I used Motrin on my own and after a year, it got better. It's fine today with no surgery.

Friend of mine had a hip replacement and said the same thing - very easy. He's also had shoulder surgery - much, much worse afterward.

I’m a PT and it could be done but you would be pretty busy coming to therapy. I’m pretty positive (in Arkansas at least) it’s illegal to schedule treatments on two separate cases a day so you’d be doing therapy 2x a week on the elbow and 2x a week on the shoulder so that would be a lot of trips to the clinic and depending on your insurance and co-pays you could be dropping some cash on therapy.

You might do the most urgent one first and knock out your deductible and hit the shoulder immediately afterwards or wait until January and do the shoulder so your deductible is wiped out for the rest of the year.

You might be able to find a doctor to do both right now and therapy would be able to do it all if you’re wanting it all over with but that whole side would be pretty uncomfortable and rough to deal with for a month or two as you recover.

Hips are relatively easy all around. Knee replacements are brutal. The surgery is pretty significant. You should watch one on youtube, but take my advice and never watch it before you have it done because it's going to scare you to death. The rehab was pretty intense, and the pain was really intense - I was on percocet regularly for about three months. But it was nothing compared to the shoulder. My PT said it was because your shoulder joint bears all the weight of your arm and there's really no way to relieve that, so that's why the pain is so intense.

I hope I never have to get the shoulder fixed again. If I do, I'm going to try to live with it first.

My mother had both knees replaced at the same time. One was shot and the other was going so the doctor said go ahead and do them both at once. There was a surgeon on each leg. It only took 33 minutes! Hell, just getting my meniscus snipped took 45. The only problem she had was they bumped a nerve in her right leg causing her right foot to tingle and roll inward. She walked with a cane for about 6 months after surgery until the nerve grew back. Now, she only uses her handicapped placard to park up front at the grocery store when it's raining.

Funny thing: The next day she was still high as a kite from pain meds and doesn't remember the conversation but I asked her how she was doing. She told me her left meniscus was hurting. I told her it wasn't. Then she kept insisting that it was and I would say that it wasn't. She finally blew up and yelled "Don't you tell me what isn't hurting!" to which I said "Mama, you don't have a left meniscus."
