OT: Sandals Honeymoon

Just got back from 3rd trip to Saint Croix. It's a US Virgin Island, so no passport needed, everything in US currency, etc. Good place to go if you want to do your own thing, and enjoy snorkeling, hiking, etc. Locals are friendly but pretty much don't give a 17 if you are there or not, which I like. Couple of small resorts on the island, no all-inclusive that I know of. If you enjoy Disneyland, this is not your place. If you like driving around in a jeep to deserted beaches, this is a good spot. We stayed on the west end of the island, literally woke up, walked 50 feet to the beach with the snorkels, and away you go.
Well, I think what hurt it worse was the appearance that they pulled punches in the investigation because of who the Dad was.
You mean the father who was also arrested as part of said investigation?
People see what they want to see. Although their emotions and desperation were certainly understandable, Holloway’s parents jetting down there and getting all up in the middle of everything didn’t help matters, either. And it was them pushing the narrative in the media that the investigation had been corrupted.
At the end of the day, it was an unsolvable case from the get go, as it pretty much always is when there is not a body recovered. You had a psychopath who told like 5 different stories as to what happened, to the extent that none of the stories were credible (one of which even was that he actually killed her). Anything short of Van der Sloot saying he killed her and then going and digging up the body himself in front of authorities was not going to be admissible in court. Thankfully, he got busted somewhere else and is no longer a threat.
My wife and I have been to Ochi twice and loved it. We stayed hillside with a Butler. I liked having the butler thought it was worth it.
Bumping this so it doesn’t get lost. The wife and I loved our honeymoon. Our one complaint is we wished we were at a location that didn’t allow kids. Highly recommended it if possible.
Been to Sandals Ocho Rios. Not bad. Breakfast was a fine treat every morning. Rest of the food was okayish, and I am not a picky eater. The campus was big enough that you could find a hammock, tree, swing or something to nap in during the day and be left alone. The excursions were very cool. Did snorkeling and climbed that big *** waterfall. Also, went horseback riding & visited some old house/slash fort that was neat. While at the beach you will be hounded by locals trying to sale you weed, a jet ski ride, and all kind of goofy trinkets. You can ignore them or buy whatever you want.
They have plenty to do. I did not get a butler because I am a cheap MF'r, but it was not bad going to the bars to get drinks. The staff was great and very friendly. The staff had a house band also and they even let me get up and jam with them one night. I asked them alot of questions and they were always giving tips on where to get good food, which areas are safe, was Bob Marley really killed by the CIA.

Nearly 3 decades in here and wouldn't change a thing. Not rubbing salt in a wound, just encouraging the OP.
If you want to get away, just you and the wife. I would suggest Petit St Vincent. It’s a private island and you can go all day without seeing another person. It was perfect for us but it’s not for everyone.
My other favorite place is Mango Bay in Barbados. You can walk off the property. You can do excursions all over the island. It has very good food and there are two top notch restaurants right down the road. You are also walking distance from a marine reserve that offers fantastic snorkeling.

we stayed at La Toc when we went to St. Lucia. It’s more of the low key laid back resort of the 3 with the golf course (which was more our speed)
The grande was more of the main stream/party place and more stuff going on.
Halcyon only had like one restaurant that people wanted to go to and we didn’t really go there at all.
You can go between all three of the resorts.

Wow I figured I’d get some responses but not this many.. the pack really should charge for all this good advice. I’ll definitely take it into account. Some of these places sound awesome but may be out of our budget. And the COVID restrictions have us worried about some places. Appreciate the help
Costa Rica has been on my list for years. It might even be my #1 non-European country as far as a place I’d like to go outside the US.
I was curious because on some islands you almost have to stay in a resort to stay safe.
My recommendation would be to go to Turks and Caicos or the Virgin Islands and rent a place through VRBO and skip the all inclusive. But that’s just me.
We went to Turks and Caicos about 3 years ago and to the USVI last month. Rent a nice villa (we always get one with a pool for night relaxing) and rent a car. You can stop by a local grocery store and grab stuff for breakfast and beach lunches and eat out at local places for dinner. I like doing this because you’re on your own schedule and can see more of the islands and get a broader experience. We drove to some incredible beaches in Turks and Caicos and we were the only ones there.
In my opinion, if you spend the money to travel and want to come away with awesome memories, then experience the local culture. If you want to chill on a beach at a resort all day, just go to 30A…
