OT: Rutgers faculty union calls strike

The faculty union has called a strike. There has never before been a faculty strike at Rutgers. There will be picketing in New Brunswick at the following locations:
  • College Ave: 43 College Ave., outside Scott Hall (smaller pickets may be set up in front of Winants, Academic Building, and SCI)
  • Civic Square Building: Mason Gross/Bloustein, 33 Livingston Ave, New Brunswick
  • Cook/Douglass: corner of George and Chapel Dr./Nichol Rd
  • Livingston: Livingston Student Center, 84 Joyce Kilmer Ave, Piscataway
  • Busch: outside Campus Center, 604 Bartholomew Rd, Piscataway, bus stop side
  • Main large rally site: Voorhees Mall
There will be picketing in Newark at the following locations:
  • Plaza in front of Robeson Campus Center, 350 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
  • Plaza outside Law School, between University and Washington
There will be picketing in Camden at the following location:

Interestingly enough, Holloway's e-mail in response to the strike does not say that the University is going to seek an injunction. I don't know why.

I don't want to defend the strike. I think it's wrong to call a strike when negotiations are actively going on and when the two sides are making progress. I also think that students are entitled to get the education they are paying for, and that students should not be penalized for the administration's sins, whatever they may be.

But I do want to say that the strike is not primarily about the regular faculty (although the faculty does want pay increases and, considering inflation, that's not an unreasonable request). The key issues concern compensation for graduate students and part-timers. Neither is a group that makes a lot of money, so perhaps both deserve some sympathy.

No sympathy for those unions. They are trying to inflict as much pain as possible on students to get their way. Very disgusting.

Libs gonna Lib. Now you say they need a pay increase for inflation caused by Libs....

Aren't the Graduate Assistants getting paid and getting their degrees free or reduced?

Now our kids get RU Screwed. Why not wait until June to negotiate before Fall semester.

Congratulations President Holloway on the Universities first strike. Will our kids get refunds for not being taught during the semester.

A growing contingent of people in this country are not only not religious, but show hate and disdain for religion. These people seem to forget that one of the founding principles of this great country was freedom of religion. But some of these same people seem to hate this great country too. They are free to leave if they don't like it.

So they turned this offer down??!!

In the Sunday night statement, Holloway said that the university has offered compensation programs that would increase salaries for full-time faculty by 12 percent by 2025 and increases of about 20 percent in the per-credit salary rate for part-time lecturers and for winter/summer instructors over the four years of the new contract, as well as 3 percent increases in lump-sum payments to all the faculty unions to be doled out over the first two years.

It's entirely possible that they agreed to those terms but are far apart on other issues. Salary isn't the only thing being negotiated.

Disagree with this. Both groups are people who made the decision to be where they are knowing the limitations.

Under free market capitalism you ask for a raise, and if you are not satisfied you find another job and resign or resign and begin your job search. YOU DO NOT STRAND SENIORS A MONTH BEFORE THEY GRADUATE AND POTENIALLY NEED THER DEGREE TO BEGIN A JOB THAY HAVE SECURED.

What’s more disgusting and painful to the students are high paid full time faculty lifers turning classes over to low paid, part timers and TAs to teach most of their classes! My daughter RARELY had a full time faculty member teaching her class or advising. That’s what sucks. They are doing ALOT more work than what’s being paid that’s for damn sure!

Eliminate all majors that end in the word “Studies” and there will be plenty of juice for everyone. I 😀

Another example of the Rutgers Screw and why we can’t have nice things. Is it any wonder why RU grads don’t want to donate financially to the university?

At least they were getting taught in some capacity.....but that was that still happened 36 years ago for me.

I know the GAs get basically a stipend -- do they get tuition free and the stipend for teaching? How does that work?
