Seem like a rat, or two,has recently made his appearance in my son's older home.

What are some suggestions for natural treatments to rid himself of these pests?

Even an outside cat will keep them away.

Otherwise, get the blue blocks from the exterminator and make sure there are no water sources in the house. They will go looking for water in no time and if they cant get it inside they leave and die.

If you go glue board route, get two of the big boards and place them side by side with the bait in the middle, sticky stuff touching. A big rat can pull himself off one, but they’ll get bogged down on two. If you get snap traps, get the large old fashioned kind with the wire, not the newer kind that look like jaws. Salami or beef jerky hooked on firmly works well. This next option is not natural, but effective: If outside, look for their holes and pour poison bait in the holes and then close the holes up. You’ll know that hole is active if it’s dug back out. Close it up again and if it remains closed, you’ll know they took the bait and that you got them all. There could be more in there than he puts out poison for. Not unheard of to have 50 rats in a colony. They’ll take the bait if they find it. You could also go with the bait stations outside. If you kill a small one, that means there are more. The alpha sends out the little guys to find the food and bring it back home. Gotta keep working until you find those 8” suckers (body only). https://store.doyourownpestcontrol.com/rodents-animals-control-products/rat-rodent-control-products
You can get stuff here that is better than tractor supply/Home Depot, etc.
if he lives in Memphis, he can contact the health department and they will do all of this for him, already paid for by his taxes. It will just take longer for them to get to him than I’m sure he wants to wait. Other cities probably have a similar service.
I also recommend outside cats.

Caught some in a shed and caught a few in our office. We had been invaded by these huge *** rats.

About 10 years ago the dog ran one into the house. For about 12 hours I couldn’t find it but knew it was close. About 2am I just happened to be awake when it came thru the bedroom into the bathroom. I got up and grabbed one of my little brothers red Ryder BB guns that happened to be nearby. Into the bathroom I went shutting the door telling it one of us wasn’t coming out alive. It took about 40 shots with that weak BB gun but I finally took him out. I hate a red Ryder about as much as a rat. Had I had my crossman from when I was a kid it wouldn’t have taken but a pellet or two. I went back to bed victorious

Not sure if he's in a city setting but if he lives in an area with snakes then leave them alone if at all possible. I understand being hesitant leaving venomous snakes on the property, but if he sees any rat snakes then they are his best friend. They'll kill more rats and mice than a cat ever dreamed of. I had a snake guy tell me one time that probably 80% of homes have a rat snake under roof at any given time. Under roof meaning in the garage, in the attic, or in the walls. And I hope I didn't just cause nightmares for some people on here.

Yeah, sadly

Your knowledge of rats is kind of creepy bro

One of the perks of living in Memphis, besides the obvious reasons such as higher taxes, higher crime, and more noise, city residents also have or had rats in their home. I believe there are none in my house right now, but the bastards are in the yard.

The cats that call my residence their home are worthless. They only want the hand out kind of food. Last fall, a couple of them were lying under shade tree and 2 squirrels we’re getting acorns around them and they never moved.

Get a ordinary plastic kitchen garbage can (black if possible) a wire coat hanger, and a piece of block cheddar cheese.

Poke or drill two holes about midway down in the can on opposite sides. Straighten out coat hanger, put one end through a hole, poke hanger though block of cheese, then push on through to other hole, bend ends to keep hanger from coming out of holes. Put about 4-6 inches of water in garbage can, and place can next to wall or cabinet where there is activity.

Mice/rats will smell the cheese and will jump in can to get it, and can’t climb back out due to the water and wet claws.

Optional: is adding a small block of wood to top 4” of garbage can (gorilla glue or screws) but still keeping it 10” away from cheese. This will serve as a confidence step for the vermin.

You got a photo of this? Trying to see how the mice get in the can in the first place (like how tall a can are we talking?)

And do they end up drowning in that water?

Yep I had one that hung out in my crawlspace and gutters in my last house, which was in a very wooded area with mice and everything else. Sucker was about 4-5 feet long. My neighbor killed him and said it was a copperhead (idiot). Thankfully another game and took his place, but a dumb family member killed it too one day. I eventually just got a cat and put it out there.

Both of those methods work.

This is how we got rid of them at deer camp. Works pretty good.
5gal bucket with about 3gal of water in it. Put a layers of corn on the top where you can see the water, mice/rats go for the corn and drown. Inhumane? Yes. But I’m cool with most animals, except rats. 17 17ing rats.

For mice you can use these. Just drill holes on the opposite sides of a bucket and put peanut butter or cheese on the middle. The mice try to walk across and the roller throws them in the bucket.

i do something similar to this, take a five gallon bucket and put about 4 inches of water in it, antifreeze works better, I’ll explain later. Take a wooden dowel or metal, I’ve used an old broom handle or a piece of rebar. Cut a piece of pvc pipe large enough to go over whatever rod you use , about 6 inches long. Lay the dowel and pvc pipe across the bucket top. Add a stick or board against the side of the bucket for them to crawl up on and put peanut butter on the center of the pvc pipe. They will crawl out on the dowel and when they get on the pvc it will spin and they will fall in the liquid. It’s ready for the next mouse. Keep the peanut butter fresh so they can smell it. The antifreeze keeps the dead mice from stinking, I guess it embalms them.

Yes, they drown after they paddle around till they give out.

That’s why I said put can by cabinet or wall or beneath open drawer. I had a 13 gallon can.
