It happens Saturday, June 14, at Jersey Roll Bar & Grill, 901 Boardwalk in Seaside Heights.

"The restaurant's first pork roll, egg and cheese-eating contest challenges 40 participants to finish as many of the breakfast sandwiches as they can in 10 minutes. The first-place winner will receive $500, second place earns $200, and third place will receive $100."
Jersey Roll Bar & Grill's pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich is made with three slices of pork roll, two eggs and two slices of cheese.

Myself- I love the flavor and texture of Taylor ham vs the competitors of other pork rolls. So, if I am in the mood for the sandwich- I prefer TH. If the deli has one of the other brands, I will usually go with bacon instead. If someone doesn't care which brand it is- then, by all means ask for pork roll. But if you want the best, make sure their pork roll is Taylor Ham.

The government made them change the packaging name. But they called the product Taylor "Ham" from the first day they made it...

"Taylor Provisions, Inc. was the first manufacturer of the pork roll. It was initially named Taylor's Prepared Ham. However, in 1906, the company was forced to drop the name because it no longer met the requirements to be labeled a ham. Thus, the name pork roll came about. "

The reason people in Northern NJ probably refer to is as TH might have more to do with supply chain and distribution / consumer availability to NJ supermarkets like Shoprite. Maybe its changed - but I don't really recall any other brands besides Taylor at Shoprite (besides the Shoprite brand - which is likely from TH and repackaged).

• Is it in-line roller skating for you or just Rollerblading?
• Will you never go to a certain Pharmacy again if you ask for Q-Tips and the clerk points you in the direction of another cotton swab brand?
• Do you discern your packaging materials and refuse to use anything but true Bubble Wrap brand?
• Do you yell at your wife because she might have referred to the Hamilton Beach brand as a Crock-Pot?

Has to be fried. How is a matter of preference. But not scrambled.

My Wife makes it for me every Sunday like the bolded, but on sourdough bread.

Having it on the toasted sourdough is delicious and a game changer IMO.

Yeah- 20 years in Bergen and 3 months in Delaware- I have yet to order a TH/E/C - they just don't have family delis down here. So, would most likely get a generic pork roll on some crappy roll or bagel.

However as a consumer I think you are being a bit pedantic in coming down on the local delis and markets for what you seem to be referring to as some type of misrepresentation.

• The term "Taylor Ham" has become synonymous as BOTH a Branded Name and a Generic Term when referring to Pork Roll. As many have indicated in this thread - they grew up only knowing pork roll by the name "Taylor Ham". I'm guessing that many did not even know that there were different brands of pork roll (I know that I did not when growing up in northern NJ).
• Boars Head is not considered a branded name for all cold cut meats - so that example does not work.
• Coke has been considered a branded to generic name for "Cola" in the past. Coke owned pretty much most of the Cola market. However with the prominence of "Cola" marketing wars in the 80's - 90's - people now differentiate and discern much more.
• In terms of food, Jello and Popsicle might be better examples of a brand becoming more widely used as a common name for a product.

So to me it's not really all that complicated. It's not a surprising mix-up as TH/Pork Roll have been used interchangeably by many over the years even though TH is a Brand and Pork Roll is the general product.....and for those that might be picky about their Pork Roll branded choice - instead of stomping one's feet and promising never to go to some small family run deli again because of claims of misrepresentation.......it really does not seem to take more than a bare minimal amount of gravitas to confirm the Pork Roll Brand when asking for a sandwich at that local spot.

My point is pretty much along the same lines...Taylor Ham and the other brands of Pork Roll are all Pork Roll. Myself- I don't call "any" Pork roll Taylor Ham. So, if I say I want a TH/E/C, I mean just that. And I do not know of a deli I have been at in Northern NJ that advertises their sandwich as Taylor Ham unless they do in fact have Taylor Ham. I am sure there are some, but I have not seen it.

On the other hand- if at a diner and all their products are out of sight, then you never know what brand they may be using, even if they call it TH.
If I am in a deli that advertises a PR/E/C - I will usually ask what brand. If I see TH and another brand in the deli case, I would ask for the TH specifically. Much like I would ask for the Boars Head Roast Beef.

Maybe other call every single PR Brand Taylor Ham and if they do, they are also wrong to do so.

It's funny regarding boars head. I actually like other brands of cold cuts. But maybe about a year or so ago- I literally got a hankering for a liverwurst sandwich. I go to the Market Basket up here and ordered it- and of course they used boars head. About a month later, boars head LW started killing people. lol

And my go to for LW- is thick cut white bread- (never liked rye) - Red Onions, Long hots(or banana pepper) lettuce, tomato, Spicy brown mustard on bottom slice of bread and mayo on top slice, salt and pepper.

But damn *** glad it didn't kill me. lol
