It is sht like this that make us USC. Ill never forget Doty's injury when he was the starting QB designate, "stepped on foot".
Crazy crazy if this kid got hurt playin hoops.
Hey Fork, love the fact that you are seasoned. Gen Z and Millennials would call us boomers. I actually got to see Roche in the Arena back in the day. What a sight engrained in my head that I will never forget. Such a stark contrast to today's BB hero's. McGuire had the NY connection running through Columbia, no doubt. It's a long time thing. As a kid, I remember crying when John Roche turned his ankle in the 1970 ACC basketball tournament. Back then, you had to win the league tournament to go to the NCAA's. Roche's injury possibly cost us a national championship because we were loaded.

I was able to be on the court with him and several others in high school, once at a clinic at the coliseum and once during their barnstorming tour after their senior year; shaking like a leaf doesn’t do it justice. He turned many of us Catholic for a few years lol.Several years ago, John Roche came back to Columbia. He was at that antique store signing autographs. I was about 55 years old and drove up to Columbia from Charleston to meet him and shake his hand. I was shaking like a leaf. He was my idol when I was a kid.
Frank McQuire used to characterize the New York connection as “hard nosed” and “tough” players, and Roche most assuredly fit the mold. He wasn’t a dirty player but he was gritty and talented! He was the center-piece, for sure, of the most successful run in Carolina history.I was able to be on the court with him and several others in high school, once at a clinic at the coliseum and once during their barnstorming tour after their senior year; shaking like a leaf doesn’t do it justice. Don’t know how many remember the ‘alumni’ game against the current team at the coliseum back in the day; not sure but I would guess late 70s? Roche hit a half court shot that won something for someone, can’t really remember. Mike Dunleavy though was a man amongst boys in that game.
There is no player in any sport at any time at Carolina more dynamic and idolized than John Roche. Artistry and badassery all at once.
He was a big, broad man, and Lefty should have known better than to stick his jaw in the way of Ribock’s fist!Loved when Ribock went "hard-nosed" on Lefty.
As time has passed I’m always amused by the number of people who were ‘there’ that night lol. One of my good friends parents had primo season seats but we didn’t get to go to the ACC games; we got the furmans and Houstons. I watched that game on tv that night though.Loved when Ribock went "hard-nosed" on Lefty.
Oh, yeah, Tom Riker . . . another big guy . . . I forgot about him! I seem to remember he didn’t take much guff from other players unlike Owens who seems to always have someone on his back.As time has passed I’m always amused by the number of people who were ‘there’ that night lol. I did indeed attend a game against Marquette that featured a square off between Tom Riker (tommy wikah as McGuire called him) and a Marquette guy, but Riker didn’t possess the pugilist game of Ribock.
