OT: Nostalgic Burger Places...

Watched an episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and a segment was on Sid's Diner in El Reno, OK off Route 66 where they're famous for their onion burgers. Old small towns across the country seem to make the best burgers and theirs look really delicious.

Not usually moved to post about small local burger joints but Sid's looked particularly intriguing. Anyone had one?

Do you have a favorite small town burger place? I know, slow sports season.

ftworth right close to where we live is a hole-in-the-ground joint that has the most impressive burger I've ever eaten. Place is called Charley's Burgers. It's a little less than a mile north of I-20 on Granbury road. West side of the road, it's in a tiny white shack. Order the Great Burger. It's the most impressive burger I've ever encountered. Their onion rings are out of this world as well.

We went to Lake Murray to swim and we found Burger & Fries in Ardmore Great chili peppers on their burgers.

Veazey Drug Store in OKC. Great drug store burgers. Fried on a grill and greased up buns. (Not good for you, but damn good hamburgers)

Big John's hamburgers OKC. Hamburgers were huge really huge with a big plate of home made fries and if you could finish it all in 1/2 hour it was free. No one succeeded

Billy, I'm very familiar with Charley's. Ahh, the Great American burger was my go to burger for a decade. Haven't been there in at least 3 years as my new fav is in your neck of the woods in Burleson called Nicky D's. If you haven't tried them, go soon. They were featured a while back on the cable show Food Channel. I'll kiss Bevo if you don't like thrm.

Hmm I need to check that place out then!! Had no idea how long Charley's had been there since we just moved here last year and had just found it this past fall.

Sounds like one would have to be wearing their big boy pants to eat there.;)

For the Charley's fans, their obvious appealing factor is their burgers are good and greasy. By the time you finish, the grease has covered your arm to the elbow. I had no problems with the clean-up on aisle 6.

JCon that cracked me up. All my life my Mom has called it "Hamburger meat, tuna fish, etc..."
When I met & married my princess she (with her bowed-neck hawkness) has continued to remind me of the redundancies.

My mother often used hamburger meat and tuna fish as well as my favorite southern term "hose pipe".....garden hose. And then there was "lifting rag"......pot holder. LOL When we moved to Oklahoma I brought with me all my mom's Alabama southern "language". I had a lot of "new" terms to learn, and there were embarrassing lessons at times. Words like Chicago (Chicargo) and School (Skool) o_O

Not a burger but the chicken fried steak at Frosty and Ednas in Langley was really awesome and there is a lot of history with that place dating back to the building of the dam.

I could not agree more. I have taken a few thousand from the Lot-a-burger on the west side Frank Phillips Blvd and near the Tuxedo junction. Browning the buns in the grease and plenty of fresh onions.

Chicken Fried Steak reminds me of the Del Rancho supreme sandwiches back in the day. My brother-in-law mentioned not long ago there are a couple Del Ranchos hanging on around the OKC area. Man those sandwiches back when I was a kid were ridiculously good!!!

Oh yeah, Charlie's out on Lee. I was cruising Wayne's in the mid 70's and it must have been more welcoming by then because I usually had my running buddies with me in my '67 Mustang, one of which sported a 6" Afro.

Charlie's always had that Pig Sandwich sign on. Speaking of those that aren't around anymore, Rusty's had a good buger.... and Earl Drug downtown around 5th a C, or thereabouts.

But I do know what you mean. I remember the old guy that owned Doe Doe Park wouldn't let anyone but white folks come in and swim. A lot has changed.... and in many ways, a lot hasn't.

Edit: I just noticed that this is post #6000 for me, so it's imperative that I add.....

Texas still sucks. :cool:

Spoken like a Del City Boy!. Oh, yeah, Del Rancho is the best for chicken fried steak sandwiches. The nearest Del Rancho for us living here in Tulsa is in Tahlequah. I make the trip about three times a year just for the funny of it.

What's the name of the joint in Tulsa (on Peoria I think) ? It was on one of those shows a few years back for best burgers...

The oldie is Brownies, over rated, and another is Ron's, which is pretty damn good. But I like Hank's and the burgers at Patricks on 91st and South Sheridan. Sometimes the beer joints are hard to beat for burgers.

Agree about Brownies; sad to admit as a native I've never eaten at the others (except maybe Hank's). Dad did used to bring home sacks of Islander's from downtown and 5 were a start when I was a pup. So good. There used to be excellent Chicken fried steak about 18th & Yale next to the fairgrounds...
