I had to laugh. After years of controversy, UND was forced to changed its name from "Fighting Sioux".

They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to conduct campaigns and contests to come up with a unique nickname. Some of the finalists names were pretty cool..Roughriders, comes to mind.

The winner is...drumroll please. .... "Fighting Hawks"....can you get more generic?

Would someone from the NCAA -- which of course banned postseason events from UND (and in hockey, that's a big deal) unless they changed their logo -- please explain how "Fighting Sioux" and "Fighting Irish" are different? How that dignified Native American silhouette (sp?) is offensive but the leprechaun cavorting around the sidelines like some drunk is OK?

Look, I don't like "Redskins" at all, but how a specific group of natives, whether it be EMU's old "Hurons" (how did they not switch to Emus when they had to change?) or even Marquette's "Warriors," is wrong while Quakers is OK still gets to me. Is it OK to offend dead people? Fine, Spartans can stay. WTF???
