This is per djpc suggestion. We’re gonna talk Stones, ELO, Country, Van Hagar. 90’s music knocked out guitar solos? What about Clapton, Clark, Stevie Ray? Eddie, Jimmy Page, Santana, Brian May, etc. BTW, guitarists, but what about Stevie Wonder? I have enjoyed his music since he hit the charts.

What are your favorite bands? What are you listening to now? Whatever happened to Larry Lujack and AM radio? Listened to Paul McCartney & Wings Silly Love Songs, My Sweet Lord (George Harrison), Yes Roundabout, all on AM. FM really took over. Fleetwood Mac you could hear everything crystal clear with John McVie’s bass line in You Make Loving Fun and Heart kicked butt starting in 1977! And speaking of FM, Steely Dan - “FM” …no static at all.

FM started the breakout into genres to a certain degree. One used to be able to hear KISS and Debby Boone on the same AM channel. FM was much different. One FM station would play Top 40 in a market and another would do Country. Yet another would do Rock.

Starting off with a video of a Prince sound check. The guitar reminds me of his Super Bowl halftime show. When can we get another halftime show like Prince and not the BS we’ve had lately?

One of my retirement hobbies is working on learning guitar, something I've dabbled with since my days in Champaign, have almost no true aptitude for, but I love the instrument and stick with it. I also dabble on-and-off with composing/recording instrumental music, something I intend to revisit later this fall/winter.

I date back to when FM stations that played rock music were described as Album-oriented Rock (AOR) and was truly anything goes. Lots of deep cuts. Back then there was a regional flavor to music, so groups like Styx, REO, Head East, Bob Seeger, The Nuge, etc., were all staples before they broke nationally. I also remember when AM radio was much more of a pot potpourri of stuff, You could hear a sequence of Pink Floyd-Kenny Rogers-Queen-Abba and think nothing of it.

Linked below is the guitar player I've been listening to the most lately, in part because I'm trying to learn this piece. To give some perspective on my skill level, I started at the beginning of June and have got about the first 1:45 worked out as of yesterday. I could probably find online lessons/transcriptions and go faster, but I'm trying to force myself to learn it "by ear" which is extremely slow going for me.

Rush is probably my all-time favorite band. When I was young I was listening to bands like Styx, Kansas, REO, Pink Floyd during my formative years because they had a strong keyboard component to their music, which I was interested in way back then. Then Van Halen released their first record, which changed everything and in the course of a few years my listening gravitated more towards heavier, guitar based rock.--Van Halen for a while until I grew wearly of Roth, AC/DC, Rush, a little bit of Led Zeppelin. Once I got to Illinois through the influence of friends I got interested in Blues music, and ultimately discovered SRV (I was an early adopter, lol).

Nice list. Of course it’s all subjective to each individual. I loved the Black Crowes until I saw them open for ZZ Top on the Recycler Tour. I’ve never seen an entire band stand in one place for so long. I hope they got better as they got more years of touring under their belt.

There have been some good bands covering the classic rock genre since 2000. I think my favorite of them all though are The Struts. They cover all sorts of classic rock styles including Queen and the Stones. Just a couple of tunes for all to enjoy.
