A.J. Ewing gets the call.
Wow. I do not like this move. This is a kid who has less than 60 games experience in AA and AAA combined. A year ago at this time, he had just been promoted to Brooklyn from St Lucie. What's the rush?

That was a rhetorical question. We all know what the rush is. In a word, desperation. If the Mets were 10 over .500 right now instead of 10 under, they would not be making this move.

We know this much. The Mets aren't bringing Ewing up to be a bench upgrade over Ibanez. Ewing will play - a lot. I guess the worst that can happen is that he isn't ready, and we keep losing. Worth taking a shot I guess.

For those unfamiliar, Ewing is a lefty hitter. He is listed as 2B/OF but he's been mostly playing OF, primarily CF.

Here's his scouting report on the 20-80 scale, where 50 is MLB average:

HIT: 55
SPEED: 70
POWER: 40
ARM: 50
FIELD: 60
OVERALL: 55

So... we now have an all lefty hitting outfield of Soto, Ewing, Benge. They should play against all RHP's. Can sit Ewing and/or Benge against lefties.

25 years ago in 2001, the Mets received a compensatory draft pick for losing Mike Hampton in free agency. They drafted a high school kid named David Wright. They brought him up three years later at age 21. He hit the ground running, and the rest is history.

22 years later in 2023, the Mets received a compensatory draft pick for losing Jacob deGrom in free agency. They drafted a high school kid named A.J. Ewing. They brought him up three years later at age 21.

Will history repeat itself?

That’s the future or current outfield

Soto in LF / Ewing in CF / Benge in RF.

Sounds like after Stearns runs the analytics, he will play 1B

I didn't read the article. But if there is any reasonable chance that he may be fired at the end of this season if they miss the playoffs, you need to keep him FAR away from the trade deadline. You can't have him sacrificing the future by trading top prospects for hail mary options at the deadline to try and scratch into the playoffs. I'd rather Stearns hand over the keys, lock him in a room with no internet connection, and fire him in October.

Here is the Cohen quote from February which prompted the speculation:

"Table stakes is making the playoffs - you've got to make the playoffs. I missed the playoffs last year. Missing two years in a row, that's not good."

Taking that quote literally, the speculation that Stearns is on the hot seat is not at all far-fetched. I'll need to see it to believe it though.
