"Aiding the runner" wasn't allowed in NJHS back in the 70s

NFL legalized pushing/pulling runners in 2005.
Ray Rice used to grab his OL's jerseys.

The tush push is just a QB sneak with a few guys in back and less in front.
Its not a big deal at all - its just a play that's in-line with football basics
Only a couple teams do it well - which amazes me because I see why Philly is good at it (and not others) and its no secret.

Jim Nanz says he doesn't like the TP because it favors some teams OLs over others
Well duh what's new about that!?
Brady was great at sneaks - should they have been banned?
This is the dumbest thing I've seen complained about

It’s horrendous, it’s not even a football play. It’s basically rugby

Football grew out of rugby and soccer and there is still a lot in common - especially between rugby and option (wing pitch etc)
On a basic run on goal between the tackles, the OL and DL are submarining each other anyway (clogging-up the LOS).
That's how you get RB leaps over the LOS with LBs playing to stuff it
The tush just ads a push behind QB - and it will just end-up a poor sneak if QB and OL don't get low enough (Buffalo's problem)
Philly also adds a slight tip to one side or another of the OL push and QB tips slightly in other direction.

As soon as forward progress stopped blow the whistle. Any one of the refs sees the qb is stonewalled, play is over.

Hahaha no.

Just because no other teams can replicate what the Eagles have mastered doesn’t mean it should be banned.
Either need to ban the tush push or allow defense players to assist each other on field goals/extra point attempts. The NFL needs to decide. Can you help each other or not?

Stop banning strategy in sports.
Infield Shift, tush push - what's next?

Ban screens in basketball!
Gives the offense an unfair advantage.
Certain teams aren't good at using screens on offense so ban them!

Bills coach Sean McDermott from the article talking about safety:

"And so again, you have to go back though in fairness to the injury data on the play, but I just think the optics of it, I'm not in love with."

So basically it "looks" dangerous but there isn't any actual injury data to support that idea?
The entire sport "looks" dangerous.

He then goes to say basically "well we run it correctly and it's not dangerous".
So which is it?

Can someone give an actual reason for why it should be banned other than "I hate it"?
I can't. I'm an Eagle fan and don't like it. I think they call it when they are too far away from a first down or score sometimes. I'd rather just give it to Saquon.

There was a time when some old school football coaches didn't think a forward pass was a football play.
The RU v Princeton game is often described as a rugbyish sort of game

"Historian Tom McCabe ’91, who teaches a course about the history of soccer at Rutgers-Newark, says that based on written accounts, soccer and rugby skills played a prominent role in the game played on the College Avenue grounds in New Brunswick. The 25-man teams used a round ball, the players moving it primarily with their feet; carrying the ball to advance it was forbidden. One early painting of the game depicts a rectangular, soccer-like goal with a goaltender in front.

“When historians look at the nitty-gritty, they’re trying to figure out what it was,” McCabe says, “because it wasn’t American college football, and it wasn’t soccer [as we know it today]. It was more of a rugby- like game.”

Thanks for sharing this. I just finished this book, Passing Game. For those who like the Giants, Big 10 football and are interested in the history and evolution of the passing game in football, you may enjoy it: Passing Game

The thing is, the NFL has decided in favor of whatever puts up more points. Most of the rule changes over the past 10-15 years or so have been favorable to the offense.

I'm all for strategy in sports. If I'm the Spurs, I sign a midget and put him on Victor Wembanyamas shoulders. He can just drop the ball into the basket and defense cant stop it or else its goaltending.

I like being able to push a runner, I do not like being able to pull a runner.

I can't tell what's in the book but when I learned Sid Gilman I understood more. He was like the Yoda of passing.
I was a LB in a 5-2 Oklahoma and we played mostly option teams so I never had the master classes on passing - Gilman was an eye opener.

Before eliminating the Tush Push, get rid of QBs throwing the ball over the sideline out of bounds to no one, to avoid a sack or loss of yardage.
The Eagles Tush Push was inspired by former rugby player Jordan Mailata.

I can see when it spontaneously happens with some big uglys downfield. But to purposely lineup with the intention of having two guys push your QB is not in the spirit of the game or the rules.

Leave it to the hated eagles to do this. They will ban it because it simply defies the spirit of football. That is not what todays football is or should be about. Fans DO NOT like it.

But purposely lining up with the intention of taking a knee to run the clock out is in the spirit of the game or the rules?

There are a lot of weird / odd rules in football.

Teams have struggled to execute or stop the tush push. Doesn’t mean it should be banned.

Sorry, this does not make sense in any way. Yes, taking a knee to run the clock out is perfectly fine. Apples and oranges.

What makes taking a knee perfectly fine and “in the spirit of the game”?

And what makes a tush push not perfectly fine and “not in the spirit of the game”?

Clearly my post went over your head.

Otherwise you’ll be able to provide a great explanation to these two questions.

What is the "spirit of football"?

Followup: And how does the tush push go against it?

Love the Eagles! Tush push is fine!

You, on the other hand ...
