I was out there this weekend for the first time as my wife has family originally from the area. Was about a 5 hour drive from Clayton DE. We left around 0715 so it was a nice ride and the traffic around DC wasn't bad yet. I always enjoyed riding through central VA with all the Civil War history and rolling hills always felt it was a beautiful scenic view. I had no idea Liberty University was located in Lynchburg so with it being Saturday afternoon I was able to drive around the campus and outside of the football stadium. I always enjoy looking at other Division 1 stadiums/campuses which got me wondering how much they were able to spend on there stadium being they are located in a much cheaper rural area. Lastly it blew my mind I was only a few miles from Appomattox which got me to wondering how the hell did 1 of the Civil War's largest battles take place in that part of the country (western VA)

Grant broke Lee’s lines at Petersburg, making Richmond indefensible- Lee was retreating south trying to get to NC to link up with Joe Johnston. Didn’t make it. Appomattox wasn’t really a big battle, just the place were Grant finally had him cornered. Couple of small battles on the way like Sailors Creek, but the southern army was disintegrating

Liberty U. has an online course schedule that brings in well over 100M/yr. they also have a dedicated Baptist alumni base that looks at supporting athletics like tithing. They also have a conservative outlook and I'm sure they are supported by friends in Washington. Trump has been there three times. They are a major employer in Lynchburg and have great sports facilities. The religious right in Lynchburg loves them, the rest couldn't care less which is where I fall.
The great thing about the Lynchburg area however is there's never any real traffic, the weather doesn't get bitterly cold like it used to in upper greenwood lake, NJ, taxes are low, there's lots of wineries and a decent amount of breweries, there's two P-4 football teams within 80 miles, (VT and UVA), and I can drive up to RU for a game once or twice a year. Bad thing is they don't know how to bake bread, there's no real bakeries or very many decent restaurants and the pizza has improved but is still mediocre at best.
