Consistent with what the eyewitnesses were saying - rotor and tail just snapped off. Horrible.

No survivors. Witnesses all say they heard a large boom before seeing the helicopter break apart and fall into the water.

There is a video on ABC News where you see the helicopter hit the water followed by the rotors hitting the water seconds after. They had no chance to survive.

I just watched this great short video on YouTube of what mast bumping is. From what that video showed it probably was mast bumping. Also that freaks me out and makes it seem like a really bad design flaw in these types of helicopters. Like it’s super easy to create mast bumping if you’re the pilot which basically means your going to chop off the back rotors and prob tear the main rotors off the helicopter.

One of my housemates in college was an older, AF helicopter mechanic attending after his service days. He told me a story about a helicopter that crashed and then the rescue helicopter crashed. He wasn't enthusiastic about helicopters and that was all I needed to know.

RIP to the Siemens executive and his family. As well as the pilot. Horrible. It happened right by my office. I actually took an early train home (at the time of the accident). If in the office I may have seen it happen since my office is right on the Hudson and I have a window facing NYC. I watched Sully land the jet in the Hudson as well. That was surreal.

Interesting series of text messages from NY Waterway last night.
It seems they shut down the ferry temporarily right after the crash. Opened them up. Then shut down again after further assessment.

I take the Hoboken-Wall Street/Pier 11 ferry. Literally next to the helipad.

3:17pm Crash occurred

3:43pm “NYW Alert - Helicopter crash in the Hudson. Some service was stopped, but all ferries back in service. However, expect residual delays.”

4:20pm I take the ferry from Pier 11 to Hoboken without incident or delay. I honestly wasn’t even paying attention and didn’t look for any activity on the water. Hadn’t read anything about the crash other than the earlier text message. There wasn’t any big commotion on the ferry by other passengers. Maybe you couldn’t see anything?

5:24pm “NYW Alert - Due to the helicopter crash the following routes are suspended until further notice:
Hoboken/NJT to Pier 11
Paulus Hook to Pier 11
Paulus Hook/Hoboken/NJT to Midtown
Hoboken 14 - Downtown
Port Imperial - Downtown
Sorry for any inconvenience”

It is such a sad and strange story. Heard reports that shortly after taking off- the pilot was reporting low fuel and that he would have to come back in to refuel. How do you not check the gas gauge on an aircraft?

Silly landed up by the 50’s in NYC north of Hoboken. The copter crashed in the water behind my apt in Newport. It’s totally residential around that area south of Hoboken, no offices right on the water. Not sure how an office in jersey would be able to see both.

Horrible event but not how you would see both including watching sully land. Just saying seems a bit unlikely.

You are joking, correct? I worked in 480 Washington at the time (29th floor). It's an all glass building right on the Hudson with unobstructed views from the Verrazano Bridge to the GW. I sat right next to the windows facing the GW (straight view up the river). The Ellipse wasn't even close to being built at the time (nor most of the buildings in your neighborhood by the water). There are plenty of tall buildings (ex. Goldman Sachs building) that can see it all).

And that was a douche post. Like I would lie about that.

The helicopter that crashed and the company that owned it have a history of maintenance and financial issues. Personally I learned not to be comfortable with low funded travel outfits because maintenance becomes a casualty in hard economy. A few years ago I wanted to go up in a WWII bomber that visited area. Then I saw the 74 yr old pilot standing on the top platform of an 8 ft ladder trying to work on the engine before a flight. The plane crashed a few months latter.
