Honestly, what I think you'll see is a movement back to the lower levels. These higher salaries in high COL areas will go away, simply because companies need to cut costs and the value of living in a big city is diminished.

This is one of the reasons International Paper moved to Memphis from the northeast in the 2000’s. The employees that were relocated couldn’t believe how much house they could buy in Memphis. I believe all those high salaried employees were offered retirement packages not long after the move.

If you're really interested in how this CAN work Google Matt Mullenweg and read (in depth) about his company Automattic. As a side bar Automattic owns a little company called Word Press among others.

Bonus question: If you are telling me work from home is my future, do you offer me some compensation for bandwidth and office space needs at home? I mean you aren't paying commercial lease fees/sqft monthly any more and I'm expected to have enough internet to support all my home stuff plus work related video calls and such. I'd like to be paid for my and such...

I'd think of that as an option. With certain standards you have to meet to work from home.(Certain bandwidth, a non distracting background, being available during core hours, etc.) Now Mobile bay's company can pound sand. If i get my stuff done, it's not their business. If my 2 year old is an issue in meetings, then you deal with it. But otherwise leave me alone.

I get it. I love the flexible nature of work from home, and that is where most people will land, but eventually, they will expect more. Think about how punitive your thoughts are when you go into a coffee shop and the free wireless sux. We are odd creatures and very quickly take positives and turn them into negatives, thankfulness into contempt...

Compensation. Every time. Especially since un-reimbursed employee business expenses aren't deductible any more. But even if they were, compensation, every time.

This is an interesting problem from the COVID lockdowns. It was a new development at my employer as they were very rigid on "everyone is in the office 8-5". And in March 2020 figured out that being flexible in hours and WFH meant more productivity (mostly due to people working longer hours).
Baby boomers love that rigid stuff. And they don't like change. This whole COVID mess has rocked their world.

The biggest issue to me is this: if you can have employees "anywhere" why pay first world wages? How will a guy in Tunica compete with a guy in Chennai?

Kidding aside, that is a great question. What does location even mean anymore?
