Has anyone ever been able to pull off getting new equipment AND a significant package discount by threatening to cancel service?

I'm in a tough position where I'm not quite ready to cut the chord, but I'm tired of paying $130 a month. I'm sure I can call and get $40-$50 off for a while, but my equipment is getting some age on it. I feel like I need to get rid of it before it fails and I'm on the hook for it. My main receiver is very slow and the blue highlight bar in the guide disappears half the time.

Tried a few years back. Had been with them for 10 years. Had a bunch of new customer discounts they were advertising so I asked for a little. They wouldn't budge. Told em once I call dish, it was too late for them
After setting up dish I called dtv to cancel. They offered all kinds of incentives them but it was too late then. That was 4 years ago.
About to re-investigate though because of the internet half. Have never been happy with dish web.

Yeah I call every 2 years and threaten to cancel and negotiate . I have 3 additional DVRs I have acquired over the years. Call and ask if you are still under contract. This will get you to transferred to the retention dept. Let the negotiations begin. If you have to set a date 15-30 days out for them to terminate service while you supposedly arrange for the Dish Network Equipment to be installed. If they don't give you a deal they will before your cancellation date.

Don't talk to the person who answers your call, immediately ask for customer retention. You'll get more than what you would've asked the first person for.

This happened to me as a 15 yr customer. Switched to Dish. Then Dish treated me the same after about 4 yrs. just switched back to Direct and I have more channels (except f’n Fox grr) and it costs me $51/mo guaranteed for 2 yrs....which is when my contract ends.

Absolutely. I’ve negotiated Sunday ticket, new receivers, and all kinds of discounts for years by threatening to cancel every year. I will say that there was one instance about 4-5 years ago when they suddenly just refused to budge on anything, so I cancelled and went to Comcast for a couple years. However, I switched back to Direct when we moved, and now I’m back to the same old routine.

There is absolutely no reason to be paying more than about $75/mo for tv unless you have every premium channel.

On a sem-related topic, I’m about to see what this whole free unlimited cell service for a year deal is all about front Sprint. My cell phone bill is outrageous through AT&T

Resigned with dish for 88 a month. Sent old equipment which we didn’t know as installer told us it was all new. When I found out called and asked for supervisor he said it would cost me $150 for hopper 3 explained when we resigned rep told us we would get all new equipment plus installer said and installed. They gave us all new stuff at no charge. Just have to be vigilant and don’t give in, there always willing to deal to get and keep new customers.

Have you called AT&T about it? I saved 60 dollars on mine the other day by making sure I had the newest plan.

A DIRECTV repairman told my mom to cancel (account in my dad's name) and then call for "new" service in her name and get an all new install and new pricing. I don't know if I would go to all that trouble but there's that idea.

They’re doing a cancellation special right now. I called a few weeks ago with every intention to cancel and set up YouTube tv but as soon as I said the word cancel they offered me $50 per month for a year. They’re offering that deal to everyone right now.

I did this right around Thanksgiving and got 80/month off my bill for a year. No contact or anything. I have HBO and still only pay about 40/month. My Dad called after I told him about it. They wouldn't give it to him so he threatened to cancel. Then all of a sudden they knocked off $90/month.

Schedule a date in the future to cancel your service. Tell them you’ve looked into Sling and are gonna do it because it’s better than DirecttvNow. Say stop billing and send in the return boxes for January 31st or so. Within the week, they will send you to the cancellation/retention department and they call you and give you the store. Thank me later. I’m paying 55 a month for everything but premiums.

I called a couple weeks ago and rather easily got $50 off plus Hbo/skinamax free for 6 months. As an added bonus, the retention rep was a hillbilly from West Virginia, so between that and my south Mississippi drawl we could actually understand one another.

I haven't. I've looked through all the different deals that are currently being offered, and while some of them are amazing for groups of 4-5 phones, I only have 2 lines so I'm in that tough spot where it's pretty much going to be the same $100-$125/mo bill no matter where I go. That is, unless this deal with Sprint is legit. I keep thinking that there's got to be a catch, but I talked to a Sprint person two days ago on the phone, and they said it's 100% legit. As long as your existing phones are paid off, you can bring them in and switch, and it's completely free unlimited service for both lines for 12 months. Plus, there's no contract, so if there's a better deal after that period, you can always just switch back to Verizon or AT&T

Have you zoomed in on a Sprint coverage map for your area? If it's anything like mine, they should pay you to use it for a year

This. Call and say you want the "Black Friday special" and ask for the in the"loyalty department". We saved $80 a month. And my Dad, sister and aunt did the same thing. You'll at least get >$50 a month.

Write down the time you talked to them about the gift card and the person you talked to if possible

they offered me $400 in cards. I had a feeling they would “forget” and later they told me they had no record of it so i told them who i talked to and when and to pull the call. They then sent me the cards
