Going with wife and four boys. 18-24. Summer. Where should we stay?. Apartments? Hotels? Safe area of city? Need input.

Soccer is football. FC Barcelona. Sooo, on topic.

Thanks for your help.

If you go to Trip Advisor - they have a dedicated board to Barcelona - have used it in other cities and it's got a lot of good tips

Have a great time

Going to move this to the free board, you'll get a lot more responses there.

Incredible city. Enjoy the food. Go to Park Guell. Sagrada Familia is actually getting closer to being finished. Protect your belongings, especially in common tourist areas (lost my wallet as a dumb 17 year old in Las Ramblas).

And remember, it’s Barthelona.

My better half traveled to Barcelona for work for about a month pre-COVID, I went to visit for a week as I'd never been. We stayed in an AirBnB about 2 blocks from the Sagrada Famila (one of the most amazing structures I've ever seen)... If you go to the beach, watch out for the guys trying to hock cheap blankets, they'll just as soon pick up anything not nailed down... Didn't happen to me but saw a couple of them get chased by the police...

Was a great city, would go back in a heartbeat.

I thought this was about the epic champions league semifinal matchup currently going on that’s giving me heart palpitations, and taken 30 years off my life
Holy crap, just saw the score - too bad. Did Lewandowski get any run? Saw last week that he was injured but expected back.

As a Polish Liverpool fan, I was hoping for a PSG-Barca final (though Inter also has Zielinski)

I don’t think so but admittedly, I’ve been drinking orange crushes for the past four hours

For Sagrada Familia, make sure to get tickets in advance, especially if you want to walk in one of the towers. We did the passion facade last year. The stairs walking down are tight, but it cool. The towers sell out fast so get the tickets before you go.

We also did a tapas walking tour. The tour guide took us to 4 different tapas restaurants in Old Town and explained the different type of tapas, and history of the city. Each restaurant you get tapas and wine or beer.

There are some good restaurants at the beach. We spent an afternoon there and had lunch.

There is some crime, like any major city, but I never felt unsafe. Watch out for pickpockets, and don't leave you stuff laying around.

A great city.

Park Guell is free and great.
Montjuc cable car + castle (there is a museum with some history of the Spanish Civil War).
Barri Gotik (old quarter - fun walking). Be sure to get some churros y chocolate - a famous Barca treat.
Walking the Ramblas - there will be great restaurants. Order tapas. The pan con tomate (tomato bread) is typically served, but ask for it if they don’t serve it right away.
Note: You can only get your check by asking for it for your waiter.

There are the typical attractions - great beaches, a zoo, science museum, etc. I’m sure they are all fine. When I took my three boys, my wife and I walked with them relentlessly - so much boy energy to burn off.

Mugging is fairly uncommon, but beware pickpockets.

When I visited, I stayed in the southern part of the Gracia neighborhood (near Eixample). Felt safe and a good place for walking - even with wide and busy streets. The metro system is safe, extensive and reliable.

Edit: Re-read the original message. My kids were pre-teen when we visited, but all the recs still work. Maybe switch out the churros for some sangria.

There is also a Barca Museum at Camp Nou. I regretted not visiting it. I walked to the stadium with one of my boys, but it’s not visually interesting from the outside and didn’t learn about the museum until later. Barca flags are displayed everywhere.

Why not both churros and sangria?

Adding the main market is great for food. I forget the name.

And agree with the comment on pickpockets. Please keep an eye.

Barcelona has become very over touristed but it can still be worth a visit.

I live in Europe and have travelled there often. I have loads of restaurant recommendations. Let me know what type of food and price range interests you.

At least once we like to go to a real nice (homestead, Greg Bormans, Peter Lugers) place. Where we have to dress up somewhat. The others we will probably try a bunch of different things. Just send me a few we’ll check them out. At least one night seafood.

Sorry! I didn't get an alert that you had replied.

Do you know where you live be staying?

Here are some of my recommendations.

For Catalonian food.

Ca l'Estevet

Bodega Sepúlveda

I stayed at the Cotton House hotel on our honeymoon. Sorta pricey but not outrageous. Good location, and the best smelling hotel I've ever stayed in. Cool vibe in a cool city.

Thank you, still deciding on apartments for rent. Not sure of location yet.
I've stayed here with family and the location is fantastic along with decently nice/modern rooms.

In terms of a steakhouse I'd recommend this specific restaurant but it's a bit far from the city center (they have locations in the city center - but I prefer the one linked below).

Get the Chuleton

For Tapas this is the best one I've had in the city. Close friend of mine was born/raised in Barcelona and swears by it - though it's recently started getting popular with tourists.

On another note: FC Barcelona gear is extremely overpriced so I recommend you get it in the U.S if you think your kids will want them (my girls did). Maybe get the jerseys there and get them personalized at the store in Barcelona.

Did a 3 week honeymoon in September 1991 in Spain and Portugal and had awesome food everywhere - even simple gazpacho, fish soup and fresh bread could be a religious experience. Our last stop was Barcelona for 3 days and we just loved it. La Sagrada Familia is a must as is walking, shopping, eating, drinking and people watching on Las Ramblas and we also liked the Picasso Museum.

Food was phenomenal, but I'm sure many of the places we went aren't there any more, with the exception of Los Caracoles which is still there and has been there since the 1830s. I had the best paella I've ever had there and it's not even close (and I'm a paella nut) - they bring it out on these gigantic wooden paddles that look like giant pizza paddles and pile it onto your plate. Worth a visit.
