Had 2 undefeated and untied regular seasons and played for the national championship.

Poor old Spears came close but failed. I guess he shouldn't have scheduled those 4 non major schools and actually played real college football teams.

The 1922 college football season had a number of unbeaten and untied teams, and no clear-cut champion, with the Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book listing California, Cornell, Iowa, Princeton, and Vanderbilt as national champions. California, Cornell, and Princeton were all picked by multiple selectors.

Donald EUGENE Nehlen’s first 14 seasons were some of the finest coaching WVU has ever had. October 25, 1996 was really when it went down hill from a “kick in the nuts standpoint.” The guy was a good coach who started with WVU at the rock bottom and brought some modernization to WVU football Starting in 1980.

Steve Spurrier said when he left Florida ‘I simply believe that 12 years as a head at a major university is long enough and a change is needed. Don went 21 years——maybe 2 or 3 years too long.

Don should be credited for giving a great foundation of modernization and also for two of the most iconic symbols in college sports: “The Flying WV” for WVU and I’m sure those bastards in Blacksburg took note with their similar VT. The Flying WV is as recognizable as any letters in college sports. I wonder how much money that trademark has made WVU the last 40 years.

Overall Don is the best WVU Head Coach overall at WVU. Bowden was the best coach to ever coach at WVU but that was due to his Free Shoes U days. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

They should have played A&M instead of Florida back in 93. I believe WVU would have lost a close game to the Aggies instead of getting rolled by Florida. WVU had no answer for Rhett on those counter plays.

Was a bit lucky to be unbeaten in 1993. Had what, 3 or 4 games that could have been losses.

Miami had QB issues that year. That helped a lot that game. BC game WVU was badly outplayed but BC had some detrimental turnovers. VT shanked the winning FG. The defense played like **** against Louisville but came from behind to win that one. Yep. That was a lucky team. They would have lost to Nebraska same fashion WVU lost to Notre Dame in the Fiesta 89. Nebraska was very similar to 88 ND.

Coaches that would own Doc Spears 1922 team. Don Nehlen, Rich "The Shredder" Rodriguez, Bill "I can win by accident" Stewart and Dana "JC Recruiter" Holgorsen.

POs..about the Flying WV, Mike Kerrin was the WVU coordinator for development of that Flying WV logo.

Holgerson sent out Mike Kerrin (or fired him). That's a discussion for another day, but Holgerson's arrogance
let go some excellent people, support folks & especially assistant coaches.

By the way, Holgersen is 2nd all time in overall WVU wins.

Not unbeaten in 1993 season. 11-1. Lost to Florida bigly in bowl game 41-7. You can't just pick and choose what games you want to ignore.

I agree that Nehlen was the best WVU football coach but still I don't like the fact that they named the road past the stadium after him. That just feels cheesy.

I read an article around 1985 in the sports section (I forget if it was Chaz Gazette or Roanoke Times) about VaTech visiting successful athletic depts to study their success and learn something they could use. VPI reps visited WVU to try to replicate us at the time.

We were selling out football - coming off 4 straight bowls (3-1) - before 60% of teams made a bowl. Also, Catlett had recently had NIT semis, followed by a top 5 ranking in that 22-3 season. Tech copied our logo... and now do the "Lets go"... "Ho-kies." We do it better. ha

Not only do the "Ho-kies" do it, but so does "Penn-State" and Mar-Shall." I remember a joke about Marshall starting the cheer. Students were told they were going to copy PSU's "Penn-State." Took them almost the whole season to get them to drop Penn State and turn to "Mar-Shall."

You really need to cut the Marshall University fans a break. They came very close to loosing a couple of football players in a freak accident. Over the weekend a group of players went out for some horse back riding. One player was thrown from the horse and when another came to pull him to safety, they both were almost trampled to death. Luckily the store manager came out and pulled the plug.
