Ole Miss ranked #23, State #55 WTF ?

I can see the argument for State at 55 (repetition needed to install Leach's offense and lack of spring practice a year ago). Ole Miss at 23 though, I don't know about that...

I don't get the Ole Miss hate (for logically discerning their schedule). The only sure loss is Alabama. They are going to crush LSU, like most of the rest of the SEC. Auburn and Texas A&M are the toss-ups, and if you want to be a pure homer, add in MSU simply because it's in Starkville. I'm easily between 9 and 10 wins with them. The OL is back, Ealy and a stable of WRs. Their defense can't be worse. The only question is if Corral keeps his head in line, and if they can replace Moore. Sort of reminds of Snead and replacing Mike Wallace in 2009. But Lane is a good coach, and this is a big year for him, I think he keeps them in line.

May as well get ready. We won a national championship, so we'll always have that to get you through it. Just got to hope Lane leaves at the end of the year, and their recrootin class falls apart.

Looks right to me. Tons of offense/no defense is a lot better place to be than pretty good defense/no offense.

They'll do something to 17 it all up. They always do. The 3 certainties in life are death, taxes, and Ole Miss not living up to preseason expectation.

Let me get this straight...you defend 9 to 10 wins with "their defense can't be worse"? Ooooh-kaaaay...sounds great!

I see OM 30 and State 40. Could be better or worse for both teams depending on their D and our O. Don’t know anything about OM’s D.

I know our O got better towards the end, but was still bad overall. The consensus seems to be Leach’s teams show major improvement in the 2nd season. I’ll have to see it with my own eyes before I believe it will be any better.

They were 5-5 last year which would normally be an 8-4 (4-4) year in the SEC. Their defense is already in a bad spot due to the up-tempo offense. All they need to be is bend but don't break, and show SOME improvement to get another couple of wins. It's year 2 of Kiffin, another year removed from their probation, so their talent and depth has to be better each year since then.

I don't like telling you this, but they are going to be good. Real good. Prepare yourself.

Not sure what you are basing them or anyone else “crushing” LSU on. LSU returns a lot more talent than Ole Miss has ever had on their roster and they beat Ole Miss last year. The Egg Bowl is 100 % a toss up. They beat us last year because of a fumble on the goal line by the most sure handed player on our team (a team that was playing with about 45 players). They won 1 more game than we did last year. Texas A&M is a likely loss. They were just outside the playoffs last year and are recruiting at an elite level. That’s not a game they are going to win more than likely. Their win total o/u is 7 or 7.5 depending on where you look. Not many people agree that they are a 9 or 10 win team. That would be a monumental overachievement with that roster.

What stable of WRs? You lost your only good WR. The rest were nothing special and you didn't bring in anyone special really. You'll score less and give up just as many as last year.

They got out of playing A&M. That would have been a lost. I suspect they will use Covid to get out of a tough SEC road game this season.

We should be 25-35 & Ole Miss 15-25 going into the season. I mean, if you actually want to know the quality of the teams when compared to the country

The question is...Is this considered Year 2 for Leach because of Covid and lack of spring last year or is this 1-B? I hope we take a step forward but wouldn't be surprised if it comes in Year 3.

I think we are too low on that list but I don't have an issue with Ole Miss at 23. I think both are 6 to 8 win teams and Ole Miss deserves to be ranked higher going into the year based on last year's results. Both teams bring back a good bit from a year ago, I think they have more offensive talent and we have more defensive talent. The big difference is their system has proven to work in the SEC based on last year, ours is still TBD.

Lemme guess before I look.

1 - Bama
2 - Clemson
3 - Oklahomer
4 - Ohio State or Georgia or Notre Dame.

Any poll taken before the second weekend of October outside of those sort of teams is like long range weather broadcasting and click bait for the purebreeds.

We shouldn't be ranked high. We had trouble most of the season and still have a team primarily made up of young players at the offensive skill positions.

I have read other writers are like myself and interested to see what the Pirate does with a full spring and summer under his belt to evaluate players and teach his offense.

Corral and Ealy will score lots of points but can anyone name more than maybe one or two elite defensive guys?

They are going to have roller coaster games which actually may be fun to watch until they play someone like Bama, just like the rest of us.

I watched the Egg Bowl again recently and am not sure how people are seeing a big gap between our team and them. Don’t have any issue with someone picking OM to finish ahead of us or anything, but if someone thinks OM is the 23rd best team in the country, then we have to be in the 25-35 range.

We very well could have beat them last year in Oxford without Wheat and Jordan Davis. If Austin Williams doesn’t fumble and our center didn’t botch two snaps, that is a totally different game. Of course you have to give OM credit for winning the game, but I’m struggling to find this huge gap between us and them.

LOL goat.

A stable of WRs returning? Their returning receivers are no better than ours on paper.

And the best you’ve got on defense is “they can’t be worse?” Damn if I haven’t heard that line from their fan base media for the last half decade. Maybe they won’t be worse but they probably won’t be much better either. OM could be markedly improved on defense and still finish 12th in the SEC in total defense.

OM would have been 5-6 if they hadn’t dodged A&M. They squeaked out a win against an overrated Indiana team playing without their QB, and his replacement was terrible. They were one game better than us, and we were absolutely dreadful for half the season.

Three of OM’s five wins were by one score, and they were down to South Carolina in the 4th before pulling away late. They beat Kentucky on a missed XP. They are capable of going 8-4 this year but let’s not act like they are something they aren’t.

Considering they've lost two of their few key contributors from last year's defense to the transfer portal, yeah, they can be worse.

Completely disagree. Nobody deserves anything based off last year’s results. It wasn’t even a real football season. Ole Miss and State with full rosters were roughly equivalent (at worst) with a nod to State being better at the end of the season with anything close to a full roster. Neither really deserves to be ranked at all at least in the preseason, and it’s damn certain that neither deserves to be ranked 30 spots ahead of the other.

Yep, had they played A&M they most likely would have been 4-6 during the regular season and we were 3-7. So the only real difference in the records was the Egg Bowl result which we could have easily won without the costly turnovers. No way the two teams should be ranked more than 5 to 10 spots different. They have a lot coming back but so do we. In fact, I thought I heard last year that we were the youngest team in FBS.

Ole miss has fielded a “real good” team maybe a few times since segregation. I don’t like telling you this but the 2021 version isn’t going to be “real good”. A real good offense? Sure. But to say they’ll be a “good. Real good” team is overly optimistic. Prepare yourself.
