Dear God...just waiting on the OKC area legislators to pass their law forcing the big 5 in Tulsa to break their schools up. Bixby won 92-0 last night, they were up 71-0 at half. Union bet Yukon 49-27 and this is the worst Union team in probably 25 years. Jenks beat Deer Creek 56-21. Closest game involving an east side team playing a west side team was Owasso over Edmond Memorial 31-21...and Owasso trailed most of that game. Ed Memorial is probably the best team on the west side and they'll be lucky if they make the semifinals before Bixby beats them by 50. Broken Arrow plays Norman North tonight and will probably win by 30ish...Union trounced Norman North last weekend.

Next week BA plays Union. This will be interesting. Union started the season terribly but has shown some improvement the last 3 weeks. Union's problem is a surprising lack of speed at WR and at the LB position. Their OL is OK but the RB is not great and tends to jitterbug side to side frequently. The QB is serviceable. He's not a world beater but he's athletic but again, Union doesn't have any WRs who can get open.

You can imagine the dismay on the face of my OKC friends when I told them Bixby was one of the smallest schools is 6A1 so they might need to change their talking point

Montgomery is clearly an ******* for running up the scores the last two weeks. Get your starters out of there after you have a 50 point lead, Jesus Christ, don't leave them in there until it's 71-0 at half.

We've had this discussion on this board before. BA and Union and Jenks are huge when you look at total population. All 3 have multiple school sites for their HS populations. And they're all adding more and more services and programs to support students. Student's at those schools have every advantage (and sometimes more) than HS who have split and have smaller student pops. I can almost guarantee that my son (actually I know this to be true) would not have had the same opportunities for AP classes and accelerated math classes at a smaller school (we looked at BK for him for soccer reasons because they needed a GK after his FR year and some club teammates' parents were asking him to come over ). While they offered AP Calculus, it was AB level...he took BC, and then Calc 3 and Differential Equations at Union...courses not available at some of the smaller HS, even the smaller 6A1 schools.

Dems da breaks when you’re getting a straight up asskicking. I have no empathy for that side of the state. It’s only been 30 years since MWC won the last one. Figure it out, Charles McCall!

Band parents will descend on school board meetings like locusts any time a proposal to split the high schools comes up. They have the numbers to quickly put that talk to rest.

Starters were out after the first quarter. Heck…some were out during the first quarter. Bixby scored 92 points and had less than 400 yards total offense. Not sure what you want Montgomery to do here? He had a continually running clock the entire second half. Bixby could have scored 200 points last night if they had wanted.

This... there is more power in these schools bands than their sports teams. The brain damage narrative doesn't help either

Related to what, football?
Yes... it is a big deal here in Illinois. Parents are funneling their kids out of football and to other sports at the elementary and middle school levels, maiking the HS level of play fall dramatically.

Back when I had a player on the team, a new Owasso basketball coach thought that all he needed to do was show up at a school board meeting and request that concessions be turned over from band parents to basketball parents. I tried to tell him that it would never work but he went ahead anyway.

Poor guy never knew what hit him.

You can't really blame them. No matter how much we like football, it's a reality. Every other sport except hockey and boxing(or any other fighting sport) are less damaging to the brain.

Seriously, band parents control concessions everywhere. Union’s control all of Union Tuttle Concessions, have first dibs on the UMAC and then they also have a dedicated concession stand at OneOK. Anytime any other org or booster club tries to get involved it literally takes an act of the school board.

One of the best money makers for the Owasso Band Patrons is wrestling.

Band parents don’t work the wresting matches, but their agreement with the school allows them to charge a fee to the wrestling parents for use of the concession stands and equipment.

Concessions at HS sporting events is a big money maker for the programs running them. Luckily soccer at Union ahs it's own concessions stands for their games and even when the Fortuna side was playing out there during the summer, Union soccer got to run the stand and keep the proceeds. Players who volunteered to help work the stand got $10/hr towards their season fee (usually about $500). The boys and girls programs usually shared the revenue 50/50...boys' parents would work during the girls' games and vice versa. You'd be amazed at the number of people who loved stale nachos with plastic bag cheese.

Occasionally, when the band isn't available, they'll allow Pom, Cheer and other booster club orgs to run the concessions at the UMAC for non-basketball events. My daughter and wife have worked a number of cheer and wrestling events, some of which are OSSAA sanctioned events and others are just huge youth wrestling events. And I think they've even worked one of the winter guard/indoor percussion events when band is tied up.

Speaking of...anyone own a business and may want to do a sponsorship ad for Union Swim? I can get you the details. ;)
