At this point, there is zero doubt that there is no confidence in Pike’s ability to coach offense. With defense, he’s great. Someone needs to be brought in to implement and coach a coherent offense, call the guy an Assistant, call him an Offensive Coordinator, whatever, who cares what he’s called, but help is needed. We have seen the same offensive results for quite some time, enough is enough.

An offensive coordinator is desperately needed especially with Ace and Dylan coming.

The continued scoring droughts / lack of creative sets / lack of scoring is tiresome.

Schiano made changes in 2.0 hiring qualified coordinators and Pike needs to self reflect on this matter during the off season.

We need an upgrade in the assistant coaching department.

Maybe Jay Young returns.

We have sets and coaches today were rifling through plays. I question, as you say, their creativeness. We have this great asset in Cliff and we do nothing to get him in motion. Dont set back screens. Dont make his defender have to really move. Cliff doesnt have a low post toolbox. He cant get the ball 9 feet stationary from the basket

Entirely different topic but lack of players hitting the floor for Loose balls / fighting for tipped balls and lack of truly going after loose balls was quite concerning.

Mulcahy and Cam would exhibit these traits and now it’s rare when this occurs with this squad.

It’s a soft team with lack of leadership

It’s essential that Pike and staff next year hit the portal hard and bring in upper classmen with leadership skills

I think everyone would like to see it happen. Pike could then spend even more time on defense which is clearly his passion anyway

Does Hobbs need to sit him down, have a talk with him and tell him this needs to happen? Similar to how NFL owners tell a coach he’s coming back next year but only if he brings in a new coordinator? Not sure if Pike will see the need at this point to bring in an offensive guru on his own. He probably thinks the answer is more defense, more defense, more defense, and then eventually somehow shots will fall. That’s not an offense.

Why didn't he hire the Princeton guy? Was hiring Smoke - for his Detroit connections, really more important than hiring a offensive mind

We need Jay Young in one of the non-recruiting roles, and an offensive guy in the other. Matt Brady will be available with how DePaul is playing. Get him or someone similar who can either help with shooting or drawing up some plays

The ultimate question is though:
How much defense are we willing to give up for a different offensive system?

Increasing the pace significantly will increase the number of possessions and lead to increased scoring for the opponent as well.

Isn’t Pikiell signed through 2030?

Was former assistant Hobb’s the reason for our recent past success? When he left it seems our play overall has gone down and especially on the offensive side.

People were complaining about our offense long before Hobbs left.

I wonder though if he was more geared towards offensive play… reality no real offense.

All our coaches are former guards!! Not one of them can coach offense just blows my mind; I just think we don't practice offense what the hell we practice I don't know

As said famously, it’s not the Xs and Os, it’s the Jimmys and the Joes. Pike knows offense. C’mon. It’s not rocket science. His failure is the roster, particularly in the backcourt. Not only can’t the players distribute and facilitate scoring for others, they can’t score themselves (occasional JWill exception).

Even without Caleb, this year’s defense has been mostly phenomenal.

But the offense is far worse with 3 ball dominant guards who don’t involve others. There’s less team chemistry and offense than you’d see in intramural games on College Ave. This is the truth. The guards don’t and can’t play team ball. Passing is Not their talent or ability.

Sure, a major roster fail but it’s the squad Pike assembled and no amount of coaching or practice can change them into players they just aren’t.

I do think when in doubt, talent reigns supreme and overall there isn't enough of it offensively, so Pike's biggest failure for this season is in the roster...But I'm going to push back on the notion that he and his staff know quality offense...It's worse than ever this season but this has never been a great offensive team under Pike and only part of that is on talent...There is basically a negligible amount of off-ball movement in halfcourt sets, and when it is there, it seems almost half-speed or without purpose...The team wastes so much of the shot clock moving horizontally going off ball screens or inefficiently trying to dump the ball down into the post...Will the offense look better with better players? Sure, but that's only part of the solution.

Pike is an elite defensive head coach, probably one of the best in the country at the high-major level year in and year out....But he's ignored or downplayed the other side of the ball for way too long.

It’s never been great under Pike, yes, but where you’re misinterpreting is that it’s due to the kinds of players he recruits rather than his knowlege of offense. He’s emphasized top athletes and defenders like Cliff Mag Simpson and McConnell over high scoring threats.

Without viable, team oriented guards who can pass, GG and Hyatt can’t get a single open look.
