Offense First, Not Defense

His 'defense first' theory made himself alot of money and took us out of the basement. Forever thankful for that. It is evident now he has to change to get RU to the next level. The offense all around is amazingly inconsistent and slow. It is really hard to watch. The intensity they have on the defensive end (on some nights) is completely not there offensively. He needs to change and really only has this transfer portal class to do it....and forget it if Cliff leaves, he will be out by 2024 if that happens.

The problem is not the defense first mentality. Virginia has proven you can win a championship with that mentality. The problems are that the team is not talented enough. You could have the same talent level with an 'offense first' mentality and you'd have a good offense and a putrid defense and be in basically the same place.

You mean when Cliff leaves. Get used to it boys Reiber's our starting center and Agee starting power forward next year.

You can learn to play defense as a great athlete. Taking 3 years to develop a player into an adequate offensive player doesn't work. He needs to recruit offense first.

I think these random predictions of people transferring are pretty bad form. That said, I think it's extremely unlikely that we end up with that as our starting lineup because if somehow our roster is that barren it will be a lot easier to recruit transfers who want playing time.

I'm not sure there is any evidence that he is "defense first" as a recruiting philosophy in the first place.

Take a look at the players he brings in....raw, talented and athletic. Not a single knock down jump shooter or great low post player. All development players.

Agee is the one who won't be here next year. His eligibility will be used up following this season.

Cliff is not going anywhere. He loves Rutgers academically and athletically.

To be clear I don't think there is much point to bringing in non-athletic guys who are great jump shooters to play in the Big Ten. They will just end up like Issa Thiam.

Isn’t it the coaches job to recruit the talent? He lost 3 very good players from last year, sits his best recruit from last year, has a horrendous class outside of Cliff and has the worst class in B10 coming in next year including a FB player who averages 2 points. How does the talent get better?

He even talks about defense losing this game, they shot 34%! You lost because of the awful offense. Same with MN. You cannot always stop good a good offensive team/player....yes we all want to play great defense but this offensive futility is off the charts.

Yes. Why do people keep asking this question. Does there exist a single person who denies this?

I don't know, but he managed to put together pretty good teams in 2019/20 and 2020/21.

agree with this post....he needs to land a few impact transfers because he is not getting it done otherwise.

Which took years to build. All unheralded recruits for most part that developed. Nothing like that exists on the team right now with a future outside of Cliff. I’m willing to see what he can do but reality is he did not capitalize on these terrific seasons with even “good” recruiting classes and now we are Starting to see the result. There is absolutely no way we can get better without the Portal. We cannot win now unless Geo and Ron go for a combined 40+.

Hopefully he can sell being the primary scorer to someone.....we will need it to avoid a significant step backwards. The bench really shows limited signs of promise to make an impact next year...the talent is just not there.

Uh, maybe it was a rhetorical question.

This post is all contradictions. He built the teams with unheralded recruits, but also we're screwed because the recruits we have coming in are unheralded?

Yeah, but it seems like someone replies with that whenever anyone posits that talent is the issue. I've seen that question asked probably 20 times on this board.
