talks again about how Mullen blew it with his recruitment of him, and I guess this is the first I’ve heard about the bag of cash that was dropped off at his doorstep the night before signing day. It’s hilarious to me as to how many people out there think that recruiting is way too sophisticated these days for something like that to happen anymore. Wonder where it came from...

I heard that Mullen never set foot in West Point HS to check on Scott Lashley that year, so he wound up at Bama. I still get mad thinking about his recruiting effort.

In his defense, he would’ve had to turn left at the stop sign to go to the high school instead of right to go to Old Waverly. You can’t really fault him for not wanting to go so far out of his way**

The Mullen/Brown relationship simply wasn't big enough for both egos.

Mullen invented the game of football and Brown invented integrity.

The first words out of his mouth (“It was kinda too close to home”) are much more indicative of why he never wound up at MSU than anything Mullen did. As someone with almost 3 decades of connections in Starkville, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that our chances with him were never any different than they would have been if he went to high school in Maine, Seattle, or Arizona. Sometimes a homegrown kid is a detriment, not an asset. He was NEVER coming to State.

Everything else about that story also lines up with everything many folks in the know heard about his recruitment...particularly the Alabama part. Although, I don’t believe for one second he didn’t keep that money.

that reads like: "hometown kid thinks hometown school is beneath him"

mullen was a lazy, but im sure he was in the mix as anyone else we were recruiting. Sorry we didnt show you "enough love" AJ, but i doubt you would have signed anyway.

Who knows what all went down but I think Mullen tried to stay above board as much as possible since he was trying to catapult to another gig and didn’t want to sink his stock by getting involved in bidding wars with Freeze.

I heard he realized early on that there was going to be a Big bidding war and just tapped out early. Still checked in on occasion to just make sure there wasn’t a hometown discount but it’s pretty clear we didn’t press really hard

Yeah, I know enough people who know Brown who ALL say he was never coming to State. I've also heard that Mullen basically knew there was no chance to sign him so didn't bother wasting much time with him. I honestly don't blame him (Mullen).

I heard John Cohen say that AJ Brown & his dad no-showed him twice when the football staff had scheduled an appointment for them to discuss AJ's potential future in baseball at MSU.

I can understand that. I grew up in Montgomery. About an hour from Auburn. I also grew up an Auburn fan. (I got better)

The moment mom started talking about how if I went to Auburn I could come home every weekend, Auburn was right out. Nothing could have made me go there.

He was always going to go pro in baseball so I'm not sure how much bearing that had.

Everyone can think what they want but Mullen was probably above board in his recruiting although some hold it against him because he wasn't blown away by recruiting stars. He did pretty damn good at State and continues now. His approach may not bode well for him at FL. Unfortunately teaching ain't for everyone and he is a teacher and that's the way he wants it...developing players seems to be his niche

But he handled everything so well during his recruitment, his play at Ole Miss, and now after that I just can't understand why folks at MSU would have any ill will.*****

Correct. Most 18-year olds want to get away from home. I did too.

I understand him not going to State, but AJ could have gone anywhere, so why did he pick UMiss?

I don’t really want to read about that 17wad, but what did he do with the random bag? Donate it to charity?

You get mad thinking about his recruiting effort?

Cox, Jones, Prescott, Abram, Sweatt, Simmons.....

How’d he do that?

I wouldn’t say that Mullen tapped out as much as AJ just tapped himself out with multiple visit no-shows, non call-backs, etc. once his serious suitors started ramping up their offers. The writing was very clearly on the wall.

Just think for a second, why would Mullen be able to put in the effort to land other very high end players from the GTR like Willie Gay, Jeffrey Simmons, Marcus Murphy, Justin Cox, Kobe Jones, etc., but just not give a **** about one of the top 2 or 3 WR’s to come out of Mississippi in the past 30 years? Doesn’t add up, even for folks who don’t know the full back story. Just wasn’t a Mullen issue.
