Next year is now looking every bit of Rick Ray level bad. How many scholarship guys now remain? So glad we signed TWO in the early period*

We've got Ado, Stewart, and Molinar coming back. Who else?

We don't have the warm bodies to field a team right now and the circumstantial evidence points to Howland basically being asleep at the wheel.

Meaning...I don't know so I'll speculate.

LOLOL. This is like 2012 all over again. Miss the tournament (or presumed to miss it) with NBA level guys on the team. Team seems to just not have 'it'. Of course we had a limp-wrist AD who fired the coach back then due to the demands of the fans, so maybe at least Cohen won't do that.

OK, well go ahead and point me to the 5+ immediately eligible transfers he's got us in the game with so we can have enough scholarship players to scrimmage 5 on 5? But you'd rather go with general smarminess while knowing it will now take a miracle to put a .500 team on the court next year. Know why that is? Because Howland has been asleep at the wheel since the Reggie Perry class. Or maybe the Adidas microscope shut down his ability to recruit. Either way, where we find ourselves today is Stansbury leaving level of 17ed. At least Stans handed off a great foundational recruiting class at that time.

Sign 2 with 2 graduating -- don't bother to account for the 5 that transferred out(all of which probably should have been targeted attrition for us anyway, admittedly) nor the 3 that went pro -- 2 of which we knew were very good possibilities well in advance. Which leaves us with what? We've literally got 3 returning contributors and two incoming freshmen.

Congrats on thinking we've got everyone right where we want them though...

In two weeks, the program has gone from Top 4-5 in the conference next season to a 4-5 year rebuild.

I’m done listening to the excuses about Howland, and he has to be held accountable for this mess. Having a star like Perry go pro is easily excusable. Losing 5 transfers, not landing a PG transfer last year, and all around subpar recruiting for two consecutive years is his fault. Recruiting two freshmen in last year’s class that will never even step foot on the court is his fault. Having zero back up plans for any of this attrition is his fault.

It is as clear as day that he is done

Luckily we haven’t missed the tournament in 2019 or 2020. So, that has given Howland a pass for a reload year or two.

Not sure I would say it's clear as day, but history has shown that he builds to a peak then never gets back to it. Unfortunately his peak here was a 1 and done 5 seed and an underachieving team that Rona shielded from the NIT.

Well, at least Nick won't be cheating on tests now.

Is he transferring or declaring for NFL?

It doesn't take that long to reload in basketball if Howland is really a good recruiter.

Well, it took him 4 years to get to the tournament last time, and he had a much better team than what he has coming back right now.

Maybe Howland has not announced his retirement, but did tip the team.

he might retire after all this. Might be time for him to and let some new blood in there. apparently the team has lost faith in what he can do going forward. otherwise we wouldn't have so many leaving.

I’m not sure I get it. I can see Woodard, and maybe Perry(maturity) but Weatherspoon? With what’s he showed this past year, what does he think a NBA team sees in him? Couldn’t shoot, couldn’t pass. He is living in a time period of uncertainty, would his plan B be to go overseas if not picked up?

Only thing that makes sense would be Howland leaving.

I wish him and all bulldogs wanting to get paid well, but I just don’t see the the line of thinking.

A 4-5 year rebuild? In college basketball?

Situations like this is where your coach earns his money. Losing 7 scholarship players in a single year is either really unlucky and bad timing, or a signal of underlying issues that haven’t surfaced yet. Could also be some of both.

This is Howland’s thesis presentation. He can either lead the program back out of this, or figure out a way to succeed. Otherwise it’s time to rip the band aid off.

Who knows though, maybe Howland already has some ideas in the works.

Good luck in Europe, but with COVID-19, they won't even be playing either.

Where is he going?

Two things. Do you honestly think this thing will go on forever? Do you realize that pro basketball players get paychecks no matter where they are playing? People act like playing overseas is a death wish. It isn’t.

was that all on the russians?

players can make seriously good money overseas- like generational wealth. others can make a really comfortable living- like more than most here. then there are some who are able to play for a handful of years and never stick for various reasons, but get way more out of life than most here.

It can be a bit of a crap shoot since many more teams across the world are less financially stable than NBA teams, but most are quite reliable from everything i geek on reading.

perhaps he just thinks he is mentally ready to start earning money for playing. individuals leave college before graduating all the time, even if they arent going to be employed by a company in the top of their field.
he doesnt need to go to the nba.

this argument for msu fans has been going on all century- mario austin to jamont gordon to renardo sidney to lamar peters to weatherspoon.

Looks like he played another 12 years after a short stint in Russia.

I believe that was the only 3-pointer in Mario's college career. Also, note where the 3-point line was - inside the current women's line.

Nick just doesn’t have a clue. He digressed this year and was a TO machine. So either he knows he doesn’t have the grades or just planning to head to Europe. He won’t even sniff the NBA D League or G League, or whatever the hell it is.

I’m all in on the women’s team next year assuming Nikki can keep this team together.

So him leaving is good news for you, correct?
